Pleasant Hearth is manufactured by Hearth and Home Technologies and owned by GHP Group. The company produces six wood stoves, of which the HWS-224172MH is the smallest, in terms of heating up to 1,200 square feet. Pleasant Hearth offers a slightly cheaper unit, with the same output. It measures 23.25" x 26.75" x 31.25" and is approved for mobile home use.

The HWS-224172MH takes seasoned cordwood as fuel. The burn time is 8-10 hours. The stove has the capacity for up to an 18-inch log and comes with a viewing window. It connects to a standard 6" chimney.

The stove retails for $829.00 on the GHP Group site, though some retail sites have it listed for less.

Environmental Impact

The Pleasant Hearth HWS-224172MH Wood Stove is EPA certified under the New Source Performance Standard and is approved for Phases I and II. The certification states it emits 3.9 grams per hour.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

The owner's manual lists some tips regarding the stove, a few of which we will cover here.

Ash disposal should be in a steel container with a tight lid, brought outside, and kept away from combustibles.

The company cautions against burning green wood, which they claim gets 60% of the efficiency as dry seasoned cordwood, and that it may also create a cleaning issue with creosote.

Pleasant Hearth identifies a few issues that could result in difficulty getting a fire started. Poor draft, or damp or wet wood could cause the fire not to ignite. According to the company, even wood that has been dried for two years can be difficult to light if it becomes wet. Thick, black smoke is a sign of poor draft. Poor draft, couple with a cold firebox can lead to soot on the glass.

"stove"
I bought this stove about a year ago for my house and I have to say you get what you pay for. It was very expensive but worth the buy I say. I like that it burns slow and produces plenty of heat for the winter months. It is winter now so this review comes at just the right time. I have had no problems with it since purchase there is not anything to complain about. It was a good investment I say and I do not regret it I would buy the same one again. Like I said before you get what you pay for and I payed a lot so this was worth it in my opinion I would buy it again. The stove works great no issues produces plenty of heat so you can say I like it and would buy it again. I think wood stoves are a great investment that everyone should take advantage of.

"Pleasant Experience - May sound corny, but this Pleasant Hearth wood stove warmed pleasant hearts!"
I live in New York, NY and ever since I can remember it has been my family tradition to go upstate during the spring or winter months to either go camping or rent a cabin for a weekend. It was an annual reunion as my parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents and all who was available would join in. As an adult, I couldn't wait to continue this tradition with the next generation so I bought a cabin up there last year. I bought this wood stove and was concerned whether it would work well - it was one of the cheaper ones we'd seen but it was what we could afford in my budget. I was happy to realize it worked perfectly for my small cabin (about 1000 sq ft). So far I've had no problems with it, and it has not needed repairs or maintenance, and I believe it is still under warranty. I would certainly recommend this wood stove to my friends who are on the market for a wood stove. It is a good buy for the price.

"My wood burning stove is a life saver in the winter!"
I have always wanted a wood burning stove. I own a log cabin in Indiana and it gets to be very cold. I purchased this unit about a year ago and I just couldn't be happier! I think we got a good deal on it. It heats my whole home except for the basement. I do run the central heat but on low. It's extremely efficient. So far I have not needed any maintenance or repair work, but I only burn good wood which I would recommend doing if you don't want clogged chimneys and other issues. I would and already have recommended this unit to friends and family. I love how cozy it makes my home feel, especially around Christmas. I get a lot of compliments on my stove. I like that I can see the wood burning through the window. Some models don't have that, and I just love it.

Other HWS-224172MH Reviews

The wood stove rates fine on retail websites, but nothing outstanding or terrible. Some positive remarks note the stove heats small spaces well, it is easy to install and use, and it is durable. People also tend to like the look of the stove and the glass viewing window. Another common positive is the friendly price, as well as the value for the price.

A few people have complained about stoves arriving damage - with a damaged, or several damaged fire bricks, as well as other issues. There are also multiple mentions of difficulty in getting replacement parts from GHP Group. A couple of people also complained about maintaining the fire when closing the door, that it would extinguish.

One supposed independent review site rated the stove highly, noting its heat output, ease of cleaning, and its efficiency. The review also noted, while the stove is situated for 18" logs, 16" logs may be more practical. On the negative side, one cannot load a lot of wood at one time. One reviewer said they could fit four, 16" logs. And, to achieve the best results, an external air vent is needed for this stove.

HWS-224172MH Warranty
