Shaver Furnaces manufactures outdoor furnaces that burn both coal and wood. Shaver is owned by Weld Rite, Inc., a privately-owned company located in Salem, Arkansas.
Shaver Furnace was established in 1972. It was preceded by Shaver Heating and Air, a father-and-son operation that was founded in 1950. The Shavers began to develop their first prototype outdoor wood furnace for use in their own home in the 1960s.
Shaver used to provide certification to customers that its furnaces were at least 75% efficient. In 2011, following complaints from the Alliance for Green Heat, the IRS found that Shaver furnaces failed to meet the efficiency ratings of at least 75% and withdrew the manufacturer's right to provide certification. While the ruling stated that penalties may be imposed if the company continues to provide certification, it does not appear that the IRS imposed a fine on Shaver. More on this ruling can be seen here.
Due to EPA changes Shaver furnaces are now specifically designed to burn coal, but both coal and wood can be burned seperately or simultaneously. Shaver currently makes four models: the Shaver Coal Series 165, which heats 4,000 square feet and has a water capcity of 170 gallons; the Shaver Coal Series 250, which heats 5,500 square feet and has a water capacity of 230 gallons; the Shaver Coal Series 290, which heats 7,000 square feet and has a water capacity of 260 gallons; and the Shaver Coal Series 340, which heats 8,000 square feet and has a water capacity of 300 gallons.
