Overview of the Select
The State Select is a series of gas and electric water heaters. The Select gas water heaters include high-output and high-efficiency models, power vent and direct vent models, side loop models, and a model for manufactured housing. The Select electric heaters come in high-efficiency models, tall, short and lowboy models, and specialty models. Both the gas and electric models come with tamper-resistant brass drain valves.

"3 in 13 years"
Run Forrest Run. My builder put 2 State water heaters in 13 years ago. 6 years ago I had to replace both. July 2019, I had to replace one. Was replaced with a different brand. Dealing with the State to ask about warranty issues is a nightmare. Must be cheap builders grade.

Had a State Select water heater installed 18 months ago. Just after installation started smelling gas in the basement. Called the plumber, he checked the installation, it was good so he called State. The State said to replace the Honeywell controller. After replacing the Honeywell controller, the same issue. The State sent their own representative to my house (at my expense $190) and said yes there's a gas smell, but State and Honeywell say that it's normal to smell gas. Unreal. Can't fight the system. Replacing with a different manufacturer other than State and Honeywell. Also, the gas bill increased $40 month probably due to leaking gas. The moral of this story...If you're having a hot water heater replaced, be sure you ask your plumber what brand is being installed. If it's State or any brand with a Honeywell controller, run the other way.

"State water heaters are the worst!"
Purchased my home new in 2014, with all new appliances, including a State water heater. Gas control valve broke 4 years in. The part was covered under warranty, but the labor was not, and at $300, the labor cost way more than the part a few months later, had a leak from the water heater which had to be repaired, and now, less than a year after that, the burner is out. That's 3 parts that needed to be replaced in the span of less than a year, on a water heater that 4 years old. Avoid State water heaters like the plague!

"Dangerous Hot water"
Builder installed the unit in July 2015. Hot water temp has varied 120-135. It's just my wife and me usually. I drain the unit yearly to flush out any sediment. I try to check the temp anytime I shower and feel the temperature is hotter than normal. I try setting it at 120-125 which is oddly just above vacation mode so I can't adjust it much lower. The other day it felt extremely hot and was running at 155. Its a gas heater and when its water temps can raise like that on its own it becomes dangerous not just for me but small children can get burned badly by this garbage. I'm not the only one in our subdivision who got stuck with this so-called heater and complained about early failure and water temp problems. It should have had a recall on it because of the temperature issue.

"Piece of shit hot water heater"
Damn pilot light won't stay lit. Finally figured out if I put a box fan to blow right on it it would stay lit but recently storm knocked out the power so the fan went off and so did pilot light and now can't get the pilot light to relight. Tried over and over and nothing, don't buy this product they f-ing suck.

"No support available"
Just short of 6 years into our water heater and expecting for something to break as almost everyone in our neighborhood (new houses 5-7 years old now) has had water heater problems. Pilot won't light and my plumber (extended service company) says that a controller part is bad and since it's under warranty he would have to get the part from State. He says it will be a minimum of 3 days to get the part so without hot water for probably at least 5 days. I had called State earlier to see if there is troubleshooting I could do. After a recorded message about "we are experiencing larger than normal numbers of calls...leave your number and we will call you back in the same order you called in". 10 hours later - no callback and of course, no troubleshooting help online. Awful.

"DO NOT BUY"
This is the letter I sent to the State. Nothing was done, so here is my review. "Hello. I purchased this water heater in Aug. 2014. It has performed well up until recent. The thermopile assembly went out in Dec. 2018 cost $232.50 in repairs. The water heater itself cost $306.00. In Jan.2019 The Tpr valve went bad. Replaced it and still water is relieving itself to the floor. Called to talk to a rep. Who suggested reading some literature he was going to send me. Really am not interested due to the fact this water heater is relatively new. I have owned different water heaters in the past and never had any issues under 10 years with any other brand. I only assume nothing will be done to resolve this issue. I will not spend another dime on repairs to this unit. I will simply eat it and move on to another brand if need be. I will wait to hear back before leaving a review of this product online. Sincerely, Mark." I will never deal with this company again. When the unit was 4 years old the regulator went bad. They sent the part but I had to pay $200 for install. In year five there was a leak in the unit. Instead of replacing the unit I had to pay another $200 to have it looked at before they would replace it. If they do replace it I will pay another $250 for the install. So Iím $650 in the hole on a water heater thatís 5 years old. Iíve basically almost paid for a new one. Poor customer service and crappy merchandise.

"State Hot Water Heater"
We have a State water heater that was installed 3 1/2 years ago that has a 6-year warranty. This suck ass company wanted $90 delivery charge to send one here. So we agree and the heater never shows up Tuesday morning as promised. Now they claim Thursday after 3:00 pm. I told them what they can do with it. Never buy a state hot water heater - they are junk.

"Unbelievably Bad Experience"
Been in newly built house for 2-1/2 years when State water heater failed. Pilot light wouldn't stay lit. Called a technician and they worked with State support to determine a replacement part. I paid $54 to overnight the part, which did not correct the issue. Called support and asked for the only part left to replace (which the local technician recommended they send in the beginning). They refused to do that because they were confident they were sending the right part. The only way they would send this part was if I had the technician come back out (another service and diagnostic charge) and determine that the part was needed. I asked support why they didn't ask the questions during the first technician visit and their reply was "it's not my job." My solution was to purchase and install another brand water heater, especially after reading reviews from other customers. Very sad that a product won't last longer than 2-1/2 years.

Canít get a plumber to work on my unit that keeps cutting off. They list only two plumbers and the sticker with the serial number must have come off, and now State wonít even talk to us or the plumber. The plumber suggested all we can do is replace the whole thing with another brand! This is their plumber! Unbelievable.

I purchased a State water heater approximately 6 years ago. I have had nothing but problems with the water since it was installed. From day one, the water heater had to be restarted periodically. The little Thermal Reset Switch would pop out and I had to reset the unit to restart it. I have called almost every couple of months this year because the water kept shutting down. Now I call the "tech support" number and they tell me the equipment is no longer under warranty (it expired in June of this year). When I began calling about this issue, the water heater was still under warranty. Every time I called, they would walk me through troubleshooting techniques that would temporarily resolve the problem. The Thermal Reset Switch has continuously been a problem since the installation. I am very frustrated and believe I was sold an inferior product. The "tech support" people are worthless because I sincerely believe they know the product is defective. I am a small business owner and I would never dream of treating my clients this way.

"Poor quality support and life"
Donít buy this brand unless wanting to buy new one. Shortest Life Ever. We had a State Select series water heater installed in a luxury new home build. Builders selection at the time. Water heater warranty is six years - water heater cracked in 6 years 5 months. Stateís customer service response was, (paraphrased) ok. Buy new one. Water is softened to heater and drained every year, yet lasted only 6 years 5 months. Second tank; 6 years 9 months. Donít buy.

We have installed 32 State Select 50 gallon electric water heaters in condos we built from 2007 to 2011. The units were purchased through Ferguson. We have now had two water heaters leaking from the upper bung (welded nut the heating element screws into). It cannot be repaired. The first unit was 4 years old (still have not received credit from Ferguson after trying for 2 years), and just yesterday a tank that is 6 years old will have to be replaced. Of all appliances we furnish our condos with, these are the only ones we have had to replace..interesting, since they are the most simple in design and should last decades. I am disappointed in State/ a o Smith in their products and failure to stand behind their warranty. Would recommend researching and purchasing other brands of water heater

Once this unit was installed is turned my water milky and cloudy and has remained that way. I had a Rheem that was 18 years old with no problem, I just thought it was time and my water was clear. All I got from the Plumbing co that installed it was air in the lines, bad city water, nothing about the fact I never had this problem. I will replace this as soon as my coverage with the plumbing co runs out which is 2 years until then I will shut off the water when I leave the house.

"Warranty is a Joke"
I have had this water tank for 4+ years. I bought the tank from steveson plumbing, in the last 2 months they have been out here 5 different times trying to keep it working. First they replaced the thermocouple or pyle as they called it. Charged me $179 in labor. In the last 4 times out, they brought in they shop vac and said it was dirty. Today they tested my water and said that could have something to do with it.

"LOW GRADE PRODUCT to be AWAY from"
I have had houses before moving to this brand new home from 'David Weekly' (worst builders in my view) & got this low-quality State select water heaters on natural gas - within 3 years of professional installation from this so-called 'National Builders of America' - One of the twin state select water heater broke down on thanksgiving evening which ruined our plans and it started sprinkling water all around and damaged wood and our master bathroom and closet ceiling below - water sipped down on clothes and damaged wall boards on bottom all around master bathroom, I have to deal with mold caution - such a pain and headache - amazing that this kind of product breaks down in 3 years of installation whereas my previous house had 15 year old water heater which I got inspected before selling out to make sure that new buyer does not face any issue and was told it is working excellent and no need to change and here I am in brand new house and brand new heater fails down in 3 years - I read reviews and see almost 70% of people having this product are complaining - these guys should be ashamed and these builders who use them for making their profits should be exposed well so that other consumers like me can avoid both such builders as David Weekly and water heater manufacturers! What a pain no I have to deal with!!!

"Broke after only 4yrs"
Have the State select 50 gal water heater installed in late 2013 and it broke yesterday where the water spray out from top of the water heater tank and flooded my garage. Luckily it was not inside my house or on the attic. It would have flooded my house and damage the house.

State Water Heater with 10 year warranty -- valve malfunctioned after one year and one day. State refused to pay shipping on the replacement part because we were outside the one-year courtesy window. We had to pay $25 shipping plus plumber service charges to get the part replaced. Customer service sucked big time.

"2 state select water heaters gone bad"
Purchased a new home 11 years ago with a brand new state hot water heater. After 5 years it went bad. The good news is since it was under warranty I received a replacement for $50. The bad news is that I am only in year 5 of the replacement and it flooded my finished basement. Water flowing out of the bottom of water heater. Even though it was within the 6 year warranty they will not replace since it was a replacement for the first bad one. Needless to say my 3rd is not a state water heater.

"Avoid State products: garbage product"
Had a State water heater installed by the builder. It lasted less than 4 years. Replaced under warranty no labor included. New one lasted under 4 years again only to find out the warranty is based on the first one. Product not covered. Overall they make a garbage product. Hope this company goes under so others don't have the same problem. Even plumbing company said they wouldn't even sell me that brand if I wanted it.

"Pitiful performance and low quality from State"
I had two State gas water heaters installed in March of 2013. The 50 gallon had a bad electronic valve go bad in July 2016 and the 40 gallon had a tank split in August 2016. The repair to the 50 gallon cost me $150.00 to repair and the 40 gallon unit was replaced with another for $316.00. Total repair to these faulty, inferior products has cost me $466.00 to date. I called State to complain and ask for some relief to fix their pitiful products. Of course I got nowhere and was told they don't service cost, but in this case since their units were only halfway through the warranty I expected something besides "Sorry". I cannot recommend their products to anyone and would advise to buy something else. There are cheaper brands out there, so why pay a premium for non-premium!

My home is 5 years old, it came with two State Select water heaters. Both have already been replaced due to structural failure. Both tanks split on top and began leaking/spraying water. Guess what, one of them has another rusted hole on the side this time and is leaking. I have spent $2,000 on labor and yet again another heater with less than one year of service is leaking. "Hot water heater failed after 4 years - don't buy State Select"
I bought this water heater (40 gallon gas) in 2012, after my previous heater of 19 years gave out. With no warning, it stopped heating with an error code of bad controls or ignition switch. Yes, the parts were covered under warranty, but replacement labor charges were $380! Only a piece of junk gives out in 4 years. Be sure not to buy State Select.

"Believe the bad reviews"
Our house was new construction, we had no choice on the heater. It lasted less than 6 years. We came home to a flooded garage - broken water heater with water pouring out of the bottom of the heater. Plumber came after hours, replaced the water heater. State first tried to get out of the warranty by saying the date had expired, except that we closed less than 6 years ago and the house was new construction. After proving that, now they are saying the warranty only covers replacement with their own water heaters. Because the plumber used a different manufacturer, we are out of luck! $1200 out of luck? What a scam: the warranty is a scam. The product is crap anyway - lasting less than 6 years! So many neighbors in our development have had to replace them. What was I supposed to do? Go without water, let my garage continue to flood? They have no response. Customer service sucks! Do not use!

"Piece of junk! All bad reviews are true."
I just boughtt a 2013 house and this junk was installed in it. Within a few months it started resetting exactly when my 6 year old daughter was in the bathroom in middle of winter. Okay, I went to the attic and fixed it. Again after 4 months it reset again but this time it was not simple like another day. I could not turn it on. Then I called customer service. They sent me instructions to check the control valve. I checked the control valve and called them and told them it has a problem based on your instruction. They told me your statement is not acceptable, a certified plumber has to call us and speak with us on the phone and go through all of the instructions and then we will take care of it. I said okay. Then they told me you have to call our plumber to fix it if you need it right away. I called their plumber, they wanted to charge me $145 for 1 hour's service, $30 for coming and $100 for each hour. And you know what the funny things is, the gas control valve cost is only $104 where you can buy it from Amazon. But since it was under the warranty I was stuck. The Honeywell gas control valve is crap, the customer service is not a customer service. They think they are in NASA and fixing a shuttle to the moon.

"Leaking from bottom after 2 years"
Bought a State Select after our Craftsman started leaking after 20+ years. Well, 2 years into my 12-year State water heater it is leaking out the bottom and there is rust along a bunch of the seams at the bottom. What a piece of junk. Very disappointed. Thought it might be well made since it's manufactured in the United States. I was wrong. Money down the drain along with the water from the leak.

"I love my State Select water heater!"
I love my water heater! I purchased my State Select water heater for my home in May of 2007. So far, I have absolutely no complaints at all with this brand. This water heater has been extremely reliable and has completely met my family's needs for almost nine years now. It is a very efficient water heater and has never had to be serviced since it was installed in our home. It heats our water very quickly and efficiently. It has never had any rust, noise, or maintenance issues at all. I am completely satisfied and would definitely recommend this water heater to any of my close friends or family members. I will be re-purchasing this brand again when the time comes to replace the old one.

6 years 2 months, the gas control valve goes out. Replace it and find out the replacement is defective. The return process is an absolute joke. State makes it impossible to return a defective part. Just junk quality. Find a water heater not made by A.O. Smith.

Don't buy a State water heater. Their customer service is terrible. Having an issue with the reset, it keeps tripping. I know it is out of warranty so I wrote to them, told them what I had and asked for suggestions and possible solutions. They wrote back asking for the model number that I had already given them. I wrote back with that number and then they wrote back asking for the serial number. I wrote back and gave it to them and then they wrote back asking me to register my unit. I give up! So now days have gone by with no hot water and they are no help. Do yourself a favor and buy a different brand of water heater.

"Great water heater"
We have had this 40 gallon LP water heater for about 17 years now with a family of six. We have done zero maintenance on it and have had no problems at all. It does seem to struggle to keep up at times but that is because it is largely undersized.

"Don't buy this water heater"
Our water heater is six months old. We have had the warranty service out four times in a month. We still don't have hot water. The pilot stays on, but the thermostat doesn't call for hot water. They have replaced the control board, the burner, and the control valve. We still don't have hot water. If you want hot water, do not buy a State water heater!

Our State water heater was installed in 2011 on a home warranty claim right after buying our house. It lasted till December 2015 when the welds suddently gave out and it flooded our basement. The unit was still under warranty, so it was replaced for free (except for some "upgrade fee" of $89, which I am unsure what that bought us. However, there is no coverage on the labor to install, which in the end cost us at a minimum $575, but actually $899 after paying for an expansion tank installation and new valves. Not at all thrilled with what we got for our money. Too bad they don't just repay you the purchase price or fair market value and let you shop around for a new one!

"Great water heater, with great warranty replacement policies!"
I have owned this water heater since October 30, 2013 (install date is written on it). I like it because it heats up quickly and stays heated for long periods of time. I have never had an issue not getting hot water with it, love it! My only dislike/complaint about it would be that this is our second one. Not because it's a bad water heater, but because our water in our city causes it to break down quickly (so our technician told us when they replaced it). I was very satisfied though as it was replaced within the warranty time, so this one was free! I believe it was under warranty for about 5 years? (Sorry I can't remember for certain). It needed to be replaced because it started leaking because of the bad water inside (again from our city). They came and installed a new one immediately at no charge to us. Yes, I would buy the same brand again and recommend it to a friend, it's a great water heater all around!

"Gas Hot Water Heater - very pleased"
We have had the gas hot water heater one week and have been very pleased overall. Our old hot water tank broke after 10 years (also a State product) and was replaced with a new one. Items that stood out were that the tank feels cool to the touch but the water is very hot; which means the insulation around the tank is very good. It took some time to adjust the temperature as the initial setting was much hotter then we could manage and we have now adjusted it down to the lowest hot setting. Again, this impressed me that there was so much hot water at the lowest setting. Installation done by the plumber was completed in just over an hour so looking at that installation was simple.

"Very expensive - broke down after one year - horrible customer service"
Do not buy a State Select water heater! My "top of the line" unit is a little over a year old and the gas control valve goes out. I called their customer service (1-800-82102017) at least 5 times. The part is under warranty, the labor is not. The part is nowhere local. So, I paid $30 to overnight it. They said they would email me the tracking number. No email, no shipment. I called again--they are closed on the weekend. I'm going on 8 days without hot water. To say I'm pissed is an understatement. I will do my best to let everyone know my experience with this company, their product, and the horrible customer service---when all they had to do was make this right the first time. I guess they did not know that I work in public utility, and social media. My industry fuels the product you sell, and has a major influence on the reputation of your product--this is why I'm sharing my experience here, and everywhere else I can. I hope the $30 fee you charged me is worth all of the negative publicity I am giving you! "My Review of My Water Heater"
We moved into the house in December 2014 and were told that the water heater was serviced in 2013. The model number seems to indicate that it is about 10 years old. We keep it at the lowest setting and it heats the water in our house. If running a load or two of laundry and the dishwasher, there doesn't seem to be much hot water left at shower time and bath time but we have never thought about replacing it. Ultimately we plan to buy a tankless hot water heater that is more energy efficient when our current unit dies. We have never had to repair our water heater since moving into the house and while I do not think I would ever refer this water heater (or any water heater with a tank) to a friend or buy a like unit again, I am sure it will continue to meet our needs for some time.

"My Review on My Water Boiler"
We've been in this house for 15 years and have had 4 of us living here for about 10 of those years. Done lots of laundry and lots of showers - it's done very well especially with 2 teenagers working at fast food places. We've never had a problem with the water heater and honestly, I don't think I've ever run out of hot water. "State Select 75 gallon natural gas worked well"
When we moved into our house 15 years ago, we replaced the natural gas water heater with a 75 gallon State Select. Nothing wrong with the old one except its age. Had no problems whatsoever with the State Select, and we never ever did the annual maintenance. It started to leak from the tank, so it had to be replaced. I would certainly get another State heater, but the plumber deals with Bradford White, so that's what I'm getting. I'm hoping it will be as good (and yes, I will do the annual maintenance).

Our old water heater had become rusted through a leak in the roof and needed to be replaced. The plumber recommended a State water heater and said it had a full 6-year warranty and would hold up longer than normal residential brands. After he installed it we noticed how much less it runs than our old gas water heater and how much more hot water we have with the same size tank. In fact we had to turn it way down because the water was so hot, so now we get plenty of hot water and it doesn't run much.

"An Average Boiler for an Average home"
This boiler was in my home for a total of 5 years. In short, it is dependable for the purpose that it was installed in my home for. My only grievance with this boiler in particular is the length of time it takes to heat up, especially in the winter. However, once it is started it works like a dream. I would like there to be a way to conserve the heat energy somehow to make this product more efficient. I haven't needed to repair this boiler yet, which is definitely a good thing. Despite how long it takes to actually warm up, I would definitely recommend this boiler to my friends and homeowners who live more in the southern region of the country. If you live more up north, you may need something that's more dependable in the winter.

"Huge rip off"
The gas company told me that my water heater needed to be replaced. I should have been suspicious from the start. They sold me a plan where I pay $10.00/monthly for 5 years on my gas bill and they had someone come and take out my Rheem water heater and put in a State water heater. It has been nothing but trouble from the beginning. Installation was a fiasco, and now 6 months later, it heats water to scalding one day, barely heats it the next. I've tried to get the gas company to take it back and cancel the deal for months now but they won't do it. I have never heard of State before and I assure you I will never buy or allow anyone to install one in my home again. They are junk and as for the gas company, they are con artists ripping off senior citizens. I'm furious but can't do anything about it because my home uses gas for everything but lights and A/C.

The house is 8 years old and the water heater is a "builders" special. In other words, a hunk of junk. This water heater caused my heart to palpitate. It caused my home to shake and the pipes were making very loud noises. I thought my house was about to explode. I called my heating and air condition service rep who suggested I turn the water heater off and although it is a scary sound, it is the mineral element build up and the line just needs to be flushed. He arrived the next morning only to find that the gas connector was failing and I was lucky to have turned it off. He wanted to replace it for $1727.00 but I did not accept the offer. I headed to home depot and purchased a better replacement water heater for $1171.

"State Select is a great selection!"
We installed the water heater 6 month ago, and have been in hot water heaven since. I love the fact that now we have ample hot water to take showers and wash the dishes. Before putting in the new water heater we had to choose to either wash dishes or give a kids a bath in the evenings. In the mornings now, with the new water heater, two people can take showers at the same time, never having to worry if the hot water will last. Before installing the new boiler there was never enough hot water to even take one shower now we can all bathe and wash the dishes without a problem. I dislike the fact that the water is very hot and we have to be careful when washing dishes or filling the bath for the kids. We have lowered the heating temperature and still the water is very hot. This boiler has never needed to be repaired and is very reliable. We love this water heater and would definitely buy it again. I would recommend this water heater to a friend and in fact have already done so.

I have never heard so much noise when the burner comes on, the first time I thought it was my furnace. The installer came out and said that's State. I went from one type of noise to another.

I started looking for a new gas water heater due to the upcoming Federal standard changes coming 4-15-15, which are supposed to raise prices significantly and usually the 1st generation of new technology is repair prone. My current unit is a 50-gallon tank-type with power vent that was provided by the builder of my house in 1999. I'm guessing it is not a top of the line unit, but I have had no troubles with the operation. The only 1 minor complaint is that sometimes there is a gas smell from the pilot burning, as the power vent fan only kicks on when the main burner runs. So I am considering replacing it with another State brand unit.

"Trouble with a capital T"
Had a GS640YBRS gas model installed on 11/29/11. 11/29/11 - Replaced the gas valve due to water tested by the plumber, 138 degrees. No help. 5/11/2 - The water was too hot. Turned it down to warm. 7/26/12 - The water was too hot when set between warm & hot ( the dishwasher sensor says "heating delay"). The pilot was out - relit it - 3/3, 3/9, 3/10, 4/11, 4/16, 5/10 (3 times), 5/11 (3 times), 5/12 (2 times), 5/13, 5/19, 5/23 (3 times), 5/24/13 5/29/13 - The gas company replaced the regulator & meter. 11/15/13 - Smelled gas. The gas company replaced the regulator again. 1/5/14 - 12/31/14 - The water is extremely hot. I turned it down to warm. It's too cold and runs out of hot water too quickly. The water is extremely hot on the hot setting. I was told that A=130, Hot=20, Warm=55. I turned it down to warm. The setting is on Hot. I tested the water with a meat thermometer, 130 degrees. No setting helps to regulate the temperature. The water heater runs every time I turn on the hot water in any location in my home. It's very loud when it turns on; it's located in my cellar and I can hear it upstairs. It makes me nervous.

"Worst customer service!"
My gas water heater was put in by the builder 3 years ago. I have had nothing but trouble with the water heater. It's been through two igniters and several other parts. They refuse to pay labor, but the heater keeps breaking down and we keep having to pay for defective parts over and over. The worst customer service ever! I have been out of hot water about 15 times over the last 3 years, including one time for 10 days because they won't overnight parts. They sent three separate parts via snail mail. Do not buy this product! They will not stand behind it when there are defects!

I would expect that a water heater delivered and installed which then does not work would be replaced immediately. That's not the case. I had a water heater installed - not the one I wanted, but the one the plumber apparently makes the best profit for selling! The pilot light kept going out. It needed to be relit at least 7 times in 24 hours. The signal light only revealed itself properly upon the burner shutting down. At that point, I surmised there was a problem with the thermopile, wiring, or a weak pilot flame, if the booklet is to be believed. The expert who is coming the next day (Wednesday, Christmas Eve!), after my having waited all day Tuesday, said they think it might be a bad gas valve. Had I not gone down to look at the exact time, I probably would still be without hot water through Christmas. I probably will be anyway. I will not use the plumber again, I will not use the plumber recommended by State, nor will I ever buy another State nor AO Smith water heater. I plan to go to the next level with this complaint!

I bought this unit in 2011 to replace the original unit that came with the house. It worked fine for a while, but then started having problems with the pilot going out. I called the plumbing company to come out. It's the same story as other reviews I've read in this thread - the parts are under warranty but labor is not covered. We have had intermittent problems with this unit ever since. They have replaced the control module twice, checked gas flow, checked the flue stack for obstructions, but otherwise cannot definitively diagnose the problem. All labor was on me and so were parts after the manufacturer's warranty ran out. The pilot is currently acting up and is out as I write this review. I should have researched this more but I trusted the plumber's judgment. Never again.

I am writing this review in order to let all other consumers know about this brand. This is a total piece of garbage. You cannot clean it properly, as the clean out is on the bottom and it will burn up your controls in a heart beat. I am only renting a house that has one, but it has been nothing but problems and my landlord is slow to fix anything. I have had to light it a billion times. I had a brand new State Select electric water heater, and by the second year it started causing me problems. Last year, I put a new heating element in. It cost me the price of a new one for what the rip-off technician charged. Needless to say, the water heater stopped working again, and this time I decided to go with a different brand. "Great company, bad install"
The unit failed. The warranty was void. But it was not the company's fault. The install was performed by PSNC (Progress Energy Gas Company) in North Carolina. My elderly and dying dad needed a replacement for the low boy gas unit that has been under his home. PSNC pushed Dad to buy a high 40 gallon 'indoor use only' tank. PSNC did not tell Dad about the 'indoor use only'. Instead, PSNC put an AquaHut around the unit, bolted the unit inside the AquaHut and left. The unit never heated the house and Dad never had a hot shower again. PSNC told Dad that the water temperature was fine. But it wasn't. Unlike the low boy, this thing was nowhere near the furnace. It was outside in the elements! Dad died, and a few years later the unit finally died. PSNC came out, unabated the AquaHut, and there was evidence that a family of squirrels had eaten acorns and pulled the one inch of installation down from the AquaHut. I called State, and I expected to read them the riot act about allowing their 'indoor use only' products to be used outdoors. I was surprised how generous the State professionals were in providing me information about their units and how water heaters are used. They explained my options. They never pushed their products. They seemed to genuinely care about me. In contrast, PSNC installers are secretive and dismissive, and argued that a cheap, flimsy and bolted shut AquaHut constituted adequate shelter to convert an indoor-use-only unit to an outdoor unit. For pity sakes, the thing had a family of squirrels inside & actually prevented my parents from examining the gas hot water unit. My point - the unit is only as good as the installers. And at least in my family's case, the highly respected PSNC installers were horrible and they ruined what might have been a great unit. I trust State and I am looking now for a good company that can install a State unit in my area.

"Poor to bad"
My water heater leaked on Friday morning. I called a plumber and they made it out here the same day. The problem is it's a $1300.00 piece of shit. The heater is not properly installed. I could have done a better job and I am not a plumber. I priced the same gallon heater at Home Depot and Lowe's for only $400. The burner assembly has been replaced, etc., and the pilot light kept going out. Must have spent $500 for service calls to re-light it. Even the technicans couldn't understand why the failures. I bought it because the other heater I had was by A.O. Smith and it was a good one. But not this state "Select," that they make. Some suggest that the quality has declined because they are made in Mexico now. Who knows but I suggest you stay away from this product unless you want to spend big bucks and lots of aggravation.

"Brown water comes out of the hot water taps."
I had my hot water heater replaced in late December, 2013, and I had constant problems with it. I kept getting brown water from it whenever I was gone for a couple of days and returned and put the hot water on. The cold water is clear and fine. When I contacted the plumber, he thought perhaps the tank was cracked, and would replace it. Well, State Water Heaters thought otherwise. They had him do many things to try and solve the problem...bleach in the tank, replacing the anode rod, turning the water up as high as possible, more bleach... Nothing worked. Finally, the company gave the plumber permission to install another new water heater. On July 7th, 2014, this was done. This was put in with no additional charge to me. But, the problem persists. The brown water continues. I have made numerous calls to the company, being disconnected after speaking with the secretary a few times, finally speaking with a tech guy, then on to talking with a customer service representative, then a supervisor. I even called their corporate headquarters, but to no avail. I am told the same story...it's my water. The company says the problem can be fixed by having an expansion tank and mixing valve installed, and leaving the water at 160 degrees at all times. All this would be done at my expense, around $300.00 for these parts. I am appalled that the plumber and company do not stand by their product. The only thing the company did was send me a 32 page packet telling me what causes the brown water and what I can do to fix it. I have lived in this house for 30 years, and have never had this problem with the water. My neighbors do not have this problem. I have only gotten the brown water since replacing my former tank with this State Water Heater.

"FAILED AFTER THREE HOURS !!!"
I installed a State "Select" 40 gallon propane water heater in my summer cottage. It lasted for three whole hours ..... until the gas control valve failed. I returned the complete water heater to the plumbing supply company where I purchased it. I replaced it with an electric water heater... not the State brand! "Very finicky water heater"
I can't recommend the State Select gs6 50 yoct g water heater. It is a pain in the neck. It's a struggle getting technical data on this heater. It doesn't help that they have a 100 series and 200 series with the same model numbers and nowhere printed on it exactly what it is. State replaced the pilot assembly at least a couple of times when it was new in 2005. Then it started acting up a couple of years later when they fixed it again. It ran ok for five years when I turned it up for a new dishwasher. Silly me, I thought it could run at a higher temperature. It's been clicking off ever since. I have been trying to figure out why it keeps going out. There are some problems with the installation like how are you supposed to clean the flame arrester screen with it not accessible enough in the closet. Dumb expensive plumbers. Do it myself next time. At this point I think the thermal cutoff is tripping because I'm trying to run it in the upper 130s. I replaced the piezo igniter because it had a frayed wire and it was cheap. Now I'm going to raise and improve the flue so it has more than 6" vertical rise before the first 45. If it keeps acting up I may have to dump it and get a new one. This has been the most troublesome lemon of a water heater I have owned.

"Don't Waste Your Money"
Had New State Select Gas Water Heater installed on Dec. 16, 2013. Pilot light already is out Dec. 19, 2013 due to water condensation dripping into it? Plumber said "Gee,Haven't had this happen before but it will probably do it again". He re lit it at least for now. I read reviews about pilot not staying lit before he got here along with a great many other horror stories about this brand. He agreed to swap it out for a Bradford White in the morning. I am not wasting $875 on a piece of junk that has problems with only 2 1/2 days of use. By the way the manual that comes with the heater does not have the State name anywhere in it or a customer service number. Guess they aren't all that proud of their products.

Bought a State Select 50 gallon hot water heater about 2 years ago. First one started leaking within a week. Exchanged it no problem. About a month ago, it started turning off and we would have to hit the reset button to restart. Today it quit heating water altogether. "Buy Something Else"
My original State water heater unit was reliable for about 11 years. I replaced it with an identical model and it has been horrible. After being in service for about 3 years, it would not stay lit. After trying everything that State asked me to try, I had to call in the calvary. The service tech removed the burner assembly and it was covered in flaky rust. The combustion chamber was also filled with the same type of corrosion. He cleaned it out and replaced the igniter unit. The unit worked fine for about 15 months and again, the pilot wouldn't stay lit. This time, I took the burner assembly out and the burner plate was again covered in rust. I cleaned out the combustion chamber and plate and reinstalled the burner assembly. It works again... for now. Called State and even sent photos of the interior and exterior corrosion. The outside is rotting away. They claimed that this was due to normal condensation and not warrantable. I pointed out that the previous unit was the same model and it never had this problem. The CSR said that the new unit was "more efficient" and that's why it had more deterioration. Hmmm. He even had the gall to ask me if there was anything ELSE he could help me with. I said, "You were no help in the first place so... no." The message I came away with here is that I must buy a different model next time. I wish I had seen this site before I bought this State unit. I understand why the rating is so low. Stay away from this brand.

My water heater goes down after 4 years, my plumber troubleshoots the problem but won't offer any help because they claim the vent is 1' longer than recommended. They would not even sell me the part. Funny thing is that it was their recommended contractor that did the install who also would not stand behind his work. Seems like these guys are made for another. Anyhow, save yourself the headache and expense and try something else.

"Water Heater that does the job"
I have owned a State Select water heater for 2 years and its great. I bought it when came with the house that I purchased. I have always found it to be very reliable for heating enough water to provide hot showers for the whole house. Never had any issues with it. It's easy to light. The temp control is straight forward. It's a dial with the temps laid out on it. The only downsides I can think of are that it is kind of noisy when refilling and its loud when heating. Since the heater is in a closet near the master bed room we hear it, but I would assume that most water heaters make similar noise, this is mostly bad placement on the builders part. Over all it's a nice unit with comparable features to other water heaters on the market and I will replace it with the latest model when it comes time.

I have owned this same water heater for the seven years that I've resided in my home. I've never experienced any problems or complication. Never had to have it fixed, or done any altering to it's current condition. It heats all the water in my home quickly and efficiently for the majority of the time. There are days that it takes a little longer to get warm, but living in Minnesota, that's expected. I would most likely buy again from this same brand because of the lack f problems I've experienced. I know that state select is a brand I can trust, and that's rare to find in any commercial product. Once again, very satisfied with the heater and company, and if anyone were to ask me for a recommendation of a heater, I would tell them State select. (In addition, to my knowledge the previous owners didn't have any difficulties with this same heater)

"State Residental Gas Hot Water Heaters are a great value"
We've had this hot water heater only about two months, but it is a vast improvement over our previous one; despite its being from a line that does not tout its energy efficiency, it is quite efficient with the natural gas and we are seeing that add up in our bill from Atmos every month. Very quiet, practically no noise, and water heats up quickly. The capacity is plenty for our house (a family of four) and we've never, ever run out of water. I would certainly recommend this hot water heater to anyone in the market for a new one; one thing that manufacturers don't tell you is that despite the durability statements on the sides of the units, pretty much all hot water heaters are of the same quality from the same company; they all have roughly comparable working lives, and you're paying more unnecessarily for the same quality of product.
