Overview of the Performance Platinum
The Rheem Performance Platinum water heater is available in both gas and electric models. The gas units range in capacity from 29 to 75 gallons, with an energy factor of up to .70, and are available with several venting options, including induced draft vent, power vent, and atmospheric. Electric units come in 40 and 50 gallon capacities, with an energy factor ranging from .95 to 2.45 for the Performance Platinum Hybrid Heat Pump. The Performance Platinum uses a premium grade anode rod for long-lasting protection against corrosion. A temperature and pressure relief valve and enhanced flow brass drain valve are also included with the unit.

"Caught On Fire"
Our Rheem Performance Platinum water heater's control panel started an electrical fire. I have numerous documents on it - fire department report, photos, etc. It caused smoke damage and carpet damage to our home. We are out a $2,500 home insurance deductible due to the faulty appliance. After the incident I searched online regarding the particular make and model of this water heater and found out there is a recall for this very same reason. We were never notified by the manufacturer of this recall/defect. I had sent in my warranty card the day we had the water heater installed, but still did not receive notification. Notification could have prevented this fire at our house. I have tried contacting Rheem several times and have not received a response.

"Rheem is POS"
Bought a Rheem water heater in July 2018 from Home Depot. It sucks. The absolute worst. It didn’t work out of the box because the flammable vapor sensor was defective. They FedExed me a replacement part that came the following day. Plugged it in and it worked. Not even a month later, it breaks down. No power. I call and with the assistance of the customer rep, work on and diagnose the defective pos water heater. The power supply that connects to the damper is defective. They’ll FedEx me a new one but it’ll take 1 to 2 days to get to me. Oh, did I mention I have a family of 6, so all we do is laundry, wash dishes and shower. I guess we’ll do that with cold water the next couple days while I wait for the replacement part to this defective Rheem water heater. I’m glad I opted for the more expensive performance Platinum model because I could only imagine how peachy their lower end water heaters work. My advice, do not buy Rheem. Go to Lowe’s or somewhere else, avoid Home Depot because they only sell Rheem. Unless you like cold showers and an angry wife.

"Now, I am REALLY nervous about Rheem"
I took the time to review 3 manufacturers of hot water heaters & decided on Rheem to replace 21 yr old ao Smith. Since, 5-24-18, I have dealt w/FOUR tanks & maybe yet 1 more tomorrow. First delivery, was damaged by a fork lift @Home Depot, which I refused. 2nd tank delivered that afternoon for installation the next day. After installation, the unit was leaking on top. Plumber left & I called the repair no. for Rheem. 3rd unit came out w/another plumber the next day, as the first installed unit was replaced. That installation leaked from the control panel, where a sliver of metal was discovered. Called Rheem & explained that I was not pleased w/the knowledge that just maybe there would be another issue w/the quality of the unit. 4th unit came yet w/another plumber last Fri. Hot water till the following mid-day! Then, the control unit went BLANK! Turned off electricity to tank for fear of a fire. Two days later w/MANY calls to Rheem they agreed to have the 2nd plumber come back to check the unit. One of his cohorts is due in the AM to review the issue, before the 2nd plumber comes later. Confused? Why, should you be? Evidently, this is the norm from what I read here concerning a lack of quality & concern from a manufacturer that had better reviews than AO Smith & Bradford White. Doesn't bode well for consumers being left out in the cold! Have to get moving, & take yet one more COLD shower!

"Don't hope for support"
Unit is about 7 months old. One Saturday morning, no hot water. There was power to the heater but nothing on the led. Called the support followed along to check it out. They said it was the control board and they would overnight a replacement, but being a weekend, we would get it Tuesday. Tuesday comes, no part. No call. No information. We call, and are told that they are out of stock. There were others that called on Friday and got the part.

I will never buy another Rheem Hot Water Tank. Had it about a year when water got up into the wiring and fried the wiring. I'm on a limited income and so had to fix it myself. You do not make a good product. It should last longer than a year.

The unit had a defective part and did not work. There were only two technicians in S.E. Michigan authorized by Rheem to diagnose the problem. Because Rheem does not allow the technicians to stock parts, one had to be ordered. After it arrived, the technician determined that the part ordered was not complete, so another part had to be ordered. So three visits were required. The technicians do not provide an estimated arrival time, so I had to be at my home the entire day...waiting. It took ten days to finally have the heater working. It was installed perfectly. The defective part was the plug in transformer. You think Rheem would allow technicians to inventory this part, but no! Do not purchase a Rheem product. Also, when you call for assistance, you are placed on hold; average times are 30 minutes and never less than 15 minutes. Lastly, the call service personnel are not always polite and often waste time because they seemingly go through a script. So for example it may take five minutes before they finally understand that there is no diagnosis code available because there is no power to the unit. Complain and thy will cut you off. In summary, their customer service is the worst. Choose a different product manufacturer.

"Do No Buy Rheem Water Heaters"
Purchased this product from Home Depot approximately 16 months ago. Within one month of using it the top heater element shorted out and the heater leaked all over the floor. Three days later the replacement element from Rheem came and $150 later for the plumber and I had hot water again. Approximately 30 days after that the lower heater element went. This time I just went to hd and bought the replacement and $150 later for the plumber I had heat again...for a week. Then the control went giving me a high heat error. You could reset it but it would hit the high heat within a minute. Called Rheem and told them what was going on - they told me they could not send me a new control before speaking to a plumber, again. I decided that when the plumber came, he would replace this lemon with a new unit. Now it gets interesting - on June of this year I get a voluntary recall notice for this water heater for a bad control unit that causes overheating - imagine that. It is recall # 16-177 and my case # is 4654724. As it stand today they will not give me a refund for a defective unit that I spent $325 in plumbers calls and a heating element not will they take the de-installed unit which sits in my cellar. To be clear, Rheem's warranty and customer service is non-existent. They are trying to minimize their warranty exposure by not reimbursing customers. Do not buy Rheem products without non-Rheem warranties as their warranty, no matter how long, is worthless.

"Be aware of recalls"
My Rheem water heater was broken in the middle of the hot and humid summer. There was a burning mark on the electrical unit on the top cover of the water heater. Called Rheem and found out that there was a recall that the defect caused an overheat. The customer service told me they did not have technicians in my area (Connecticut), so I was on my own to look for a technician to fix the water heater. Desperate to get the water heater fixed as there is no hot water in my house and my 5- and 7-year-old children had to take cold showers every day, I found a retired technician to get the problem fixed and paid him cash as he asked. In Rheem's reimbursement email, it states "if paid by cash, please be sure to provide phone number of technician so we can confirm payment with them." I emailed back the reimbursement request form with the technician's name, phone, recall installation done and the amount he charged me on form page attached. A few days later, I received an email asking for a letter head invoice from the technician's company. Called the customer services, explained the situation. But they were going on a spinning wheel asking for the letter head invoice. I escalated the request to their higher management, still got the same answer. Finally I gave up on the reimbursement request, for it's not worth my time and trouble to going through it. I just paid for it myself. By the way, the payment amount is below Rheem's allowance for the recall installation. So here is what I have experienced with Rheem and its product. Be aware!

"Unhappy with Rheem"
Got a Platinum Plus electric water heater from Home Depot and after 7 months it started super heating the water. I replaced the element and it worked for a while and then same thing started happening again -- super heating water. Not long after I got a recall letter From Rheem for the same exact problem. Came to find out there were actual fires from this problem. So I called the recall line and didn't get anywhere. Finally called Rheem technical and talked to a rep who wanted to blame every problem on me, I thought him to be extremely rude. Brought the water heater back to Home Depot who graciously gave me my money back. 5 stars to Home Depot for customer service. Rheem will not ever get any more of my money.

I read all the reports and decided on the Rheem Performance Platinum electric hot water heater via Home Depot. Reportedly it is more efficient and has a longer warranty than the next lower basic model. Plumber installed it, but had to have an electrician complete the electrical hookup. Sadly, the fancy control panel caught on fire in the first 20 minutes. Rheem is sending me back to Home Depot to switch it out. Wish me luck!

"Economic and Very Efficient."
I have owned this water heater for about 4 months. I had it installed professionally from a big box retailer and paid around $500. The new water heater replaced an old one which had been in the house for about 10 years. Almost overnight I noticed the difference in capabilities and efficiency. I used to have to wait almost 3-4 minutes for the water get warm when I showered and now with this new unit my problems have been solved. I have had absolutely no issues with this water heater. It has been overall very good so far. Based on the performance of this water heater so far I would recommend it to a friend. I currently have 3 people in my household and it seems to perform very well for the size.

"Performance Platinum 50 Gal. Short 12 Year 40,000 BTU ENERGY STAR Natural Gas Water Heater"
I've owned it for a couple months now. It's amazing. I haven't had any trouble yet. I would run out of hot water fairly quickly but not anymore. The only disappointing thing is the WiFi. It confusing and not easy at all. Other than that I haven't had any problems and would definitely recommend it.

"Performance Platinum Boiler Review"
I purchased this water heater in September 2015 because my previous 40 gallon tank that came with the house started leaking. I kind of wanted a larger capacity heater so when we have guests over the holidays the water would stay hot. But I have a small 1 story house and the closet that the boiler has to go in is too small for a more efficient boiler. The boiler actually provides plenty of hot water for all. I researched different brands and the Rheem seemed a better value than most. I really didn't have much experience with Rheem products but it was great to me and my family this past winter. Although I was able to install this water heater by myself, I would recommend you get someone to help or have it professionally installed. I had a good pair of hand trucks to maneuver heater around, but it was still difficult. The "Sharkbite" fittings I bought from Home Depot also made the installation easier. All in all I would definitely buy Rheem products in the future and would recommend them to anyone looking.

"Beware of warranty verification program"
I was in our local Habitat for Humanity (HH) restore and noticed they had about 30 Rheem gas water heaters with a few scratches and dents on each one, all tall models from 29 to 50 gallons. I inquired about them and was told they were purchased from Home Depot. I asked about the warranty and they said I had to call Rheem for that. I took down the model and serial # on a 29 gallon, went home did some research and called Rheem to verify the manufacturer's warranty. I explained to them about Habitat for Humanity, the lady looked up the number and told me that it was covered by a 6 year parts and tank and 1 year labor warranty. I said that was great and that I was thinking about getting the 40 gallon instead and asked would it be covered also, she said it should be but call back when I got the serial #. I went to our local Home Depot to see if Habitat for Humanity purchased the water heaters from them. The manager said they did not come from his store. I asked about the warranty and he said they would be covered by Rheem but Home Depot adds additional time for in home labor and that would not be covered. I went back to Rheem picked out a 40 gallon, called Rheem back gave them the serial number to verify the warranty, I told the lady the entire story again (it was a different person) and she told me it was covered by a 12 year parts and tank and 1 year labor warranty. She did some checking and told me they were purchased from a Home Depot in Pennsylvania, and they were indeed covered by the Rheem manufacturer's warranty. I bought the water heater and asked the store manager if they had the jacket cover and was told no. When I got home I called Rheem again and inquired about the jacket cover and draft hood, which was also missing, and was told that the warranty covered those parts. She said she would ship them to me and then got the ship to info. She told me I should receive them in 3-5 days. On the 6th business day I called Rheem again to inquire about the parts since I had not received them. I was told they had no record of any parts shipment. I gave them the exact time and date of my call when the lady took my shipping data, I was told they had no record of my calls. I was transferred to tech department and spoke with Marie, told her the entire story and was then transferred to Adrian, told the entire story to him, he said they have no record of any parts shipment and transferred me to the parts department. I spoke with Helen, she managed to look up the part numbers and said she would ship them, then asked how I was going to pay for them. I told her that I was told they were covered under they warranty. She said they couldn't be since the water heater was not covered under warranty since they were scratched and dented. I told her that I was told on 3 different occasions, by customer service and the warranty department, that the water heater was covered. She basically said they didn't know what they were talking about. I had already reworked my water lines to accommodate this water heater. I was very fortunate that Habitat for Humanity took back the water heater, since I had not installed it because I was waiting for the parts, and refunded my money. If you use the warranty verification program, don't just take their word that it is covered, get it in writing, I wish I would have. An absolutely terrible experience. Rheem must be a totally disorganized company or they are less than honorable.

"Water heater review"
I have owned my water heater for about one year now. I love how the water in both bathrooms and sinks are not influenced by one another. My previous water heater would take a while to get hot then lose the heat very quickly and be nonexistent if more than one person was using hot water. This makes taking showers much more enjoyable. It is very important that the water heater is powerful enough to supply a household with hot water. I dislike that you cannot set it at a heat that is not scalding without that much difficulty. It is either super hot or not that hot, the in between is kind of lacking. I would most definitely recommend and buy this product again. It has worked without any problems and when there are any repairs needed to be done regarding plumbing I face no heating issues when turned back on.

"Why I like My Water Heater"
I have owned this water heater for about a year now after I replaced an old unit that had started leaking. The installation was simple and didn't take very long. I really like it because even with a family of 5 there is always hot water when I have to take a shower and even when we have guests over we haven't run into any problems. For the amount of time I have had the product I have been very satisfied with it and so far have nothing that I dislike about it.

"Exceptional Rheem Water Heater!"
My husband and I have a Rheem water heater, and my oh my is it beyond amazing! When we purchased the home we live in we had a Kenmore water heater in there and it would work, but the hot water was short lived and the heater was so old it was frightening. We googled online for many different types of heaters, and came across nothing but exceptional reviews for the Rheem heater. We went to our local Home Depot and purchased it, I was surprised at how inexpensive it was for such amazing quality. I have 3 children that live with me as well, and we never run out of hot water. The only issue we had with the heater was that the fitting didn't flush with our old model, but that was minor and my husband fixed it in a snap. I recommend it to all.

"Rheem 50 gallon gas water heater review"
I've owned my current water heater for close to one year. I purchased this water heater from our local Home Depot. Installation was easy and seamless and didn't take more than three to four hours. It was installed during last winter so we were immediately able to try the heater. The heater is efficient, works great, and is the perfect size. Provides all the hot water my family or guests need. There is nothing I dislike about it since it hasn't given me any problems. Since installation I have not needed any repairs. I would definitely purchase this again if I had to, and from the same store since we received the best customer service. I have already recommended this product to all my family and friends & will continue to do so in the future. I also received a great deal on the water heater, making the purchase even more worthwhile. So far the water heater has been great, and we are very satisfied. We'll just have to wait and see how it does with longevity.

"Great Hot Water Heater"
For the past 6 months I've had the hottest water imaginable. This is an amazing hot water heater that supplies a consistent amount of hot water in a flash. It doesn't take long for the tank to heat up so you don't have to wait long if you have a power outage. It's also super easy to install. As a homeowner, we installed this ourselves. It's also compatible with the WiFi module that allows you to set your heater from your phone. It alerts you of a leak and everything. It comes with a super long warranty so I'm not worried if something happens to the heater that we'd have to delve out a whole lot for a new one. I would definitely recommend this heater to someone looking for a new one. It's energy efficient too, and one of the perks of getting this heater was that our energy department offered a $100 rebate.

"Bad water heater"
Purchased a Performance Platinum water heater from Home Depot and it doesn't ignite the burner. This unit requires an electrical outlet nearby. Tried everything to ignite it. Wasted the whole day. Don't buy a Rheem water heater. I went to Lowe's and bought a Whirlpool and it is less expensive and made in the USA.

"Rheem is horrible!"
I bought the Rheem Performance Platinum from Home Depot on 6-28-14. It was sold by Home Depot, and it had a really good warranty. 6 months later, and an untold number of cold showers later, I hate it. Rheem has sent me two new sensors. I have complained to them no less than 5 times about their product. I want to take it back, but Home Depot will not accept it without an authorization number. Rheem won't give me a number, and instead will now (again after 5 complaints) be sending out a tech. Per Mike at Rheem, the fact that I am dissatisfied with the product and its non-performance is not good enough for a return. It doesn't consistently work. I have taken two cold showers just this week. Every night, I have to go outside and make sure the water heater is not blinking 7 times to ensure my best chances of having hot water in the morning.

There is a post from a homeowner on thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com stating that the anode rod on his Performance Platinum failed after 3 months, the rod was replaced and all is well so far. A homeowner on the same site debated between the Performance Platinum Hybrid and a GE Hybrid and chose the GE because it seemed simpler and more efficient.
