Overview of the Sta-Kleen 805
The Reliance Sta-Kleen 805 is a discontinued gas water heater featuring self-cleaning technology to prevent corrosion and increase efficiency. It featured a patented Aqua-Force Ring to keep sediment from collecting, and extra-thick foam insulation and heat traps to assist in holding heat inside the glass-lined tank.

"On a mission"
It's August 12, 2018. I purchased a 50-gallon Reliance Sta-Kleen 805 water heater from Home Depot in April 1995. Yesterday, after 23 years, the tank has started leaking. I bought my first house and replaced the existing water heater knowing the problems an old heater might have. I cannot be more satisfied with my choice. Now I am on a mission to find a heater compatible to the 805. Nothing less.

"Unbelievable-Purchased January 21, 1995 and still going."
This has to be some kind of record. I still have the original receipt. The only problem was some kind of valve on the outside of the tank that failed at least 10 years ago sending water through the basement wall into the garage and down my driveway. The valve was replaced and no problems. Hey, Reliance...can you offer me a 'deal' on a new Reliance gas water heater? Contact me asap via e-mail (see below); my elevation is 7420' fyi. I am getting a new furnace and air conditioning unit this spring...I was offered a Rheem 6 year warranty gas water heater through a contractor but I have real misgivings about it.

"Reliance Sta-Kleen 805 Water Heater"
I purchased a 50 gallon Reliance Sta-Kleen 805 water heater from Home Depot around 1991. After 25 years the tank has started leaking. The only problem I had after many years of service is the pilot light would not stay lit. I cleaned the orifice tip in the pilot and it has worked perfectly ever since. I believe the heater's long life was due to the glass-lined tank and the swirl-clean technology. I tried looking for a new Reliance water heater at the big box hardware stores with no luck. I went online to Jet.com and found a California Low-NOX compliant Reliance Self-Cleaning Natural Gas 1.5 Insulated 50-Gal Gas Water Heater for ~$600 delivered. If the new Reliance lasts as long as the old 805 model I will be quite satisfied.

805 in service since January 1990. No problems. What's the record for one of these?

"40 gallon tank"
Tank model year 2001. The tank has lasted well beyond both warranties (tank and parts). We do not have any of the following issues: water pressure, hot water, sediments or pilot light. This tank is a workhorse, well built and still kicking. I'm sure it's near its life cycle. Wanted to share with anyone that has one of these, how well built it is and to acknowledge the company that manufactured it. I hope they continue to manufacture current tanks and that it stays within the United States. Always want to support our U.S. made models.

"The Reliance Sta-Kleen 805 is a good conventional water heater"
My Reliance Sta-Kleen 805 water heater is 14 years old, and was in this house when we bought it. It is a natural gas water heater. This water heater works pretty well, we usually have hot water. The water heater is in the basement, and sometimes the water is hotter downstairs than up, this can be a problem when guests burn their hands at the kitchen sink. The other option is having lukewarm showers. We have had the water heater pilot light go out a few times when the basement flooded, but it re-lighted easily. Occasionally, we have had some carbon buildup on the burner. I cleaned it with a wire brush and it worked well again. Another maintenance issue is that hard water sludge builds up in the tank after a few years, and we need to drain it. All in all this is a good workhorse of a water heater.
Other Sta-Kleen 805 Reviews
Most reviews on the Sta-Kleen 805 on sites such as terrylove.com concern a leaking or failing water heater. This actually seems to be a positive, because many of these tanks are 15 to 20 years old, meaning that they lasted far past their warranty period.
The Sta-Keen 805 comes with an 8-year limited warranty on the tank and a 5-year limited parts warranty.
