Richmond Power Vent Water Heater Overview

The Richmond Power Vent is a discontinued gas water heater. The unit was available in 40, 50, 60, and 75 gallon tall and short capacities. Several models were Energy Star rated. An integrated self-diagnostic system monitored the water heater, and flammable vapor detection sensor disabled the heater in the event of flammable vapor accumulation. It featured venting lengths of up to 100 feet, with vertical or horizontal termination. The EverKleen self-cleaning system helped prevent sediment build-up for improved efficiency.

"Richmond Hot Water Heater Blows"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

I bought a Richmond hot water heater 2 years ago and it's leaking from the top now. Just recently went through chemo and could not stand the egg smell it made me sicker. Took out the a rod and this voided the warranty. The hot water heater is wasted now, it's been leaking from the top for about 3 weeks. Sent an e-mail to Richmond, who passed the buck to a Rheem agent. That agent did not even address my problem. Please do not buy a Richmond Power Vent hot water heater or you are in for a big disappointment. I was told not to buy a Richmond by my plumber but did anyway because of the convenience of making payments at Menards. Guess you learn from your mistakes.

"New models more problems"

2.0 rating

I have 12 power vent hot water heaters from this manufacturer in my rentals. Those I bought in 1998-1999 were good – no major issues for many years. As they age they leak which is normal. I started to replace them with the new models. I have replaced six of them in the last four years; of those six three have had problems: control valve, gas sensor, igniter. I call the 800 number they politely diagnose and send me a part. Sometimes it works, sometimes not – so I repeat the process. On the latest issue I have tried three times – replaced the control valve, cleaned the igniter system and burners and it still does not work consistently. Once the six year warranty ran out on one of them – they wanted $400 for a replacement part (for a $600 heater). I do not recommend any of the models since 2006 and those from 2009-10 being even worse based on my experience.

Rheem does not stand by their products. I had issues from the time the hot water heater was new. The error codes were misleading as finally years later it issued a control valve issue. Turns out it was the control valve all along since the problem would repeat itself every few months(always required re-setting the power). I read that this was a recurring problem on these models. When I called Rheem, they were very argumentative and even though they admitted this was a re-curring problem on these models, they refused to cover the defective product. a new valve costs as much as a new water heater. I will never buy a Rheem or Richmond product again.
