York Stealth Heat Pumps

York Stealth Heat Pump Overview

The York Stealth heat pump is a discontinued split-system unit with an efficiency rating of up to 15.7 SEER and 9.3 HSPF. A twin-single compressor delivered increased humidity control and longer system life, while mufflers, compressor mounts, and specially-designed sound blankets reduced vibration and operating noise. Permanently lubricated motor bearings required no servicing, while fully exposed refrigerant connections and a single electrical control panel made servicing easy. The cabinet was constructed of primer-coated steel with a powder paint finish for protection against the elements.

York had to replace our York to settle a law suit they then installed a Stealth unit, e4ts036s06, under terms of the suit settlement, which ran until 3 years after the warranty was up and now has to be replaced because the parts to make repairs are not available to repair the Stealth.

"York system lasted 5 .5 years"

I am really angry at York right now!!! I had a York 16 Seer 4 ton heat pump and natural gas furnace installed at my house 5.5 years ago. These were supposedly higher end units installed. I recently had to replace both units because the York units failed, and there is only a 5 year warranty. The heat pump had the controller board fail, and as the technicians were pulling it out, they noticed that the fan motor was leaking oil, so it would have had to be replaced as well. The furnace had the inducer motor, main control board and fan controller module fail. All of this would have cost $4500 to repair. The technicians told me they had installed about 20 of these units 5-6 years ago, and most of them are failing. There should have been no reason to have to replace a complete hvac system after 5 years in a new house!! And I find no where else to ask questions about the York reliability.

"Service call almost every year since installation."

Costly unit bought 8 years ago. Efficient but always a problem, freon every 24 months (at least), fan motor seized and replaced, different parts replaced and recently a special 'board' that was not sending back heat demand on the furnace while on auxiliary and/or emergency heat. Over $2000 on service calls, freon and parts.

"Absolutely the worst in the business"

After replacing the compressor we had nothing but problems with stats code 4. The dealer said they could not fix the problem and I need a new unit. York customer relations did not return any of my calls. I had a third party (Trane Dealer) fix the problem with a $15 Temperature sensor which was damaged (charred) during the compressor replacement.

Terrible. Have the York Stealth hot air heat pump. Compressor failed and had to pay ~$1000 to have a new one installed. Compressor was under warranty but the labor was not. What is worse is that I had convinced my neighbor to get the same unit (early in my ownership) and guess what, his compressor just went as well. These things are faulty and someone should do something about it.

Other Stealth Reviews

There are very few online comments regarding the Stealth. A homeowner on hvac-talk.com had problems with his Stealth unit turning off and had three techs look at it, with no solution. Later in the thread, he said that a fourth tech identified the problem as the compressor.

Stealth Warranty

The warranty for the York Stealth heat pump was comprised of the following:

  • 10-year limited warranty on the compressor
  • 5-year limited warranty on parts

The warranty did not cover labor costs.
