It is a two-stage induced draft boiler that has what Weil-Mclain call “integrated PhD (Precision Hydronic Data) Technology”, a system that “initiates efficient and ongoing hydronic heating”. The design of the Weil McLain Ultra gas boiler is CSA certified.

Weil-McLain has recalled Ultra Series 80,105,155 and 230 boilers manufactured after June 1, 2012 and prior to March 11, 2014. A cap on the boiler manifold can crack and release gas into the home, presenting a risk of fire or explosion. Consumers may contact Weil-McLain at 888-770-7139 for more information.

"Outstanding Ultra 3 – 105"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

Our old cast iron boiler failed this winter and we had a professional installation of an Weil Mclain Ultra 3 105 in our residence that was built in 1939. The installer plumbed the boiler incorrectly, however, I read the manual cover to cover and I called them back. The boiler was plumbed correctly. I optimized the out door temp. Setback, the outdoor temp sensor, and a few other items. We like to have the house cool for sleeping and the boost function brings the temperature in the house when we awake. The boiler keeps the thermostat temperature without overheating, and most of the day it is in condensing mode. The modulating burner usually runs between 40-60% and we generate a good amount of condensate. Our home is very comfortable. After the boiler was installed I flushed out the radiator system using Sentinel x400 for 5 days, flushed out the entire system water twice and refilled the system water and added Sentinel water conditioner x-100. This keeps the pH of the system water within the limits demanded by Weil McLain. I also purchased a cleaner kit for the Ultra-3 105 and I will clean the boiler and insert a new igniter each year myself. The boiler needs to be maintained each year; this is a very simple boiler to work on and it is well within the means of an average homeowner handyman. The boiler is exceedingly quiet, it heats up our radiator emitters quickly. The Ultra-3 is an excellent product when installed properly. Note this boiler needs to be professionally installed but the homeowner needs to read the manual and carefully ensure that the installers follow the installation requirements. When ordering this boiler you should demand that the installer follow the installation manual in every detail. This will resolve most of the problems that people have reported on this series of boilers.

"Very energy efficient"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

This boiler has saved me nearly 60% of gas usage since replacing my old cast iron boiler. It is very energy efficient and easily will pay for itself in under 10 years of use. I've had it for one complete season and truly love the way the home stays comfortable. The installers did have an early issue with installation, but once re-plumbed it worked without problem.

"Setting the record straight again"

5.0 rating

People should read the professional installer's review a bit down below on this page. The Weil McLain Ultra boiler is an exotic piece of technology. When it is installed properly, it is one of the best condensing boilers on the market. Unfortunately, some installers and amateur diy homeowners think that they can just plop down the unit, hook everything up and that's it. Do not buy this unit if you don't have complete faith in your installer.

"In 8 years spent over $8,000.00 fixing a Weil McLean boiler"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

Spent over $8,000.00 trying to get my boiler system working. New house built in 2006. Breaks down every 3 months. $300,000 home and I have to heat water on the stove to bathe. I'm a single senior and am going on over a week without heat or hot water. I'm using portable heaters. Told I would have to pay another $600 to replace the heat exchanger that was replaced less than a year ago.

"Bad product, worse extended warranty"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

I installed an Ultra 155 in 2004. It did reduce my gas consumption by 20% but it has been nothing but trouble. After a year we had to replace the entire unit. Within the next few years we had to replace the control electronics, the wiring harness and the external temperature sensor (twice), to mention only the bigger problems. I will say that all those repairs were covered under warranty, and the company agreed to provide a no-cost 5-year extended warranty administered by Cornerstone United. They also provide warranties for other companies: avoid them! Two months before that extended warranty expired, the unit began to have ignition failures at intervals of a few weeks. Because they were intermittent, it wasn't clear until shortly after the warranty end date that the problem was and always had been a failure of the unit's ignition system. (First we just tried cleaning.) Cornerstone (should be "Stonewall") refused any coverage, first claiming that the problem was fixed by cleaning and that an entirely new problem with exactly the same symptoms happened to crop up a few weeks later. Then they shifted to a claim that they needed to be notified of the problem before the warranty expiration, though nothing in the document says that. In the end I'm replacing the boiler with one from a different company. I'm tired of worrying, waking up cold, and worrying about my pipes if I go away for the weekend, and I'm tired of fighting about repairs that should be unnecessary in the first place.

Comments about Weil-McLain gas boilers on HVAC-Talk message boards and heating contractor sites are generally positive:

  • In one hvac-talk.com forum, one service tech says that the circulator problem on one Weil McLain furnace is due to a bad motor. Heat is strong in every location except one. This heater is strong and persistent, but the circulator requires attention.
  • In another hvac-talk.com forum, another tech observes that the Weil McLain boiler works very well, especially through 3-way valves, and produces considerable heat. A couple of other forum guests agreed with this assessment.
  • In yet another hvac-talk.com forum, both techs and guests agree that Weil McLain provides good multiple relay distribution, providing that the circulator and thermostats are up to par.

Ultra Warranty

Weil McLain Ultra boilers come with a 5-year parts and labor warranty. The unit must be registered within 30 days of installation to qualify for the warranty.
