Corporate History

Jim Shields founded WaterFurnace International, Inc., in 1983, with the idea of bringing geothermal system packages to homes throughout North America. In 2009 the company name was changed to WaterFurnace Renewable Energy Inc. By 2009, all WaterFurnace products had transitioned to the environmentally-friendly R-410A refrigerant. WaterFurnace was purchased by NIBE in 2014 and continues to work as an indepenent company, although it now serves as headquarters for NIBE’s Energy business in North America.

Product Lines

WaterFurnace manufactures three lines of geothermal systems: all-in-one, split and hydronic systems. Nearly all WaterFurnace products meet or exceed Energy Star requirements for tax credits.

All-in-one units provide both heating and cooling throughout the year and are designed to replace traditional heating and cooling products.

Split geothermal systems are available in multi-zone and individual zone applications. These units can be installed with a remote air handler for installation flexibility and can complement a fuel-burning furnace for maximum efficiency.

Hydronic systems heat and cool water for hot water usage, radiant floor heating and snow/ice melting. These models use modularized design and controls to ensure high efficiency and proper staging.

Warranty terms vary depending on the unit, but all units must be registered to receive the full coverage. A standard warranty from the company covers parts replacement for a 10-year period.
