Utica USC boilers are discontinued units with an 87-percent AFUE rating. They are available in three sizes ranging from 50,000 to 140,000 BTU/H, and in natural gas- or propane-fired options. At the time of its manufacture, the unit’s ratio of cast iron to BTU heating capacity was one of the highest in the industry.
Installation of the Utica USC boiler is designed for flexibility in any home. Equipped with a stainless steel vent pipe, these units can vent vertically or through a side wall. This product also is designed for extra convenience when switching from electric heat to a hot water system, the manufacturer says.
Clean burning is optimized by the sealed combustion system, which uses outside air rather than indoor air for better heat conservation. Such a combustion system also provides protection from exposure to carbon monoxide.
The USC boiler is manufactured with a cast iron heat exchanger and stainless steel burners. The advantage of stainless steel burners is the flame pattern is uniform providing more efficiency and noise control. The unit also comes with Honeywell ignition components.
Great Boiler, about 18 years old now and very few issues over the years. Still very efficient compared to newer models available today. I replaced exhaust blower motor last year $300, other than that no other issues. Wish Utica still made them, I would buy another.
"10 years, USC-4"
Had a usc-4 installed 10 years ago, only problem has been the Honeywell gas valve went bad after 8 years. a new one cost $130 and I was able to replace it myself. Other than that, it has performed flawlessly.
"Utica USC 5 boiler"
I just had the Utica usc 5 boiler installed and this plumber has installed many of these for 15 years and nobody has ever had a problem with this model. This boiler is an 85% efficiency boiler which is the start of high efficiency and the plumber told me when you start to get the real high 95% efficiency boiler like the ub90 etc. you run into problems because there are more moving parts and many more things to break and wear out and that the usc model has much less that can go wrong with it.
Other USC Reviews
According to reviews on the internet, the efficiency of the USC boiler at 87 percent AFUE is 4.6 percent worse than the average AFUE ratings on Energy Star-rated natural gas systems. Nonetheless, a technician posting on the heatinghelp.com discussion forum feels the USC boiler is easy to service and clean. He notes on one discussion board that he’s installed roughly 100 of these units without any reported problems. Another contractor posting on this site adds that the company provides strong technical support for installers.
