The Trane XV20i is a variable speed heat pump with an efficiency of up to 20.00 SEER and 10.00 HSPF. It features ComfortLink II communicating capability, allowing the system components to communicate for optimal performance and efficiency. The unit has a Climatuff variable speed compressor which maintains consistent speeds to avoid temperature swings, and a compressor sound insulator provides reduced operating sound levels. An all-aluminum spine fin coil improves heat transfer while resisting corrosion, and an integrated fan system with a blade-down design improves performance while reducing sound levels. The unit is protected by full-sided galvanized steel louvered panels with a powder paint finish and a WeatherGuard II top, and its DuraTuff basepan is designed to resist corrosion.
In three years, we've had to replace both the inside and outside coils two times each, not to mention the dozens of service calls for error messages. My service guy is now part of the family as he is here every few days in response to the error codes which keep shutting down our system. I am done. I want nothing more to do with Trane from today on! I will pursue getting a refund from Trane for their lack of caring for their customers. I want a new (Non-Trane) unit now.

"Trane XV20i problematic"
Local dealer salesperson convinced me to go with the top of the line XV20i heat pump and 95% efficiency furnace when my 17 year old heat pump died. Despite the manufacturer claims of this being a low noise unit, I have had multiple problems with the noise and awful tonal vibration this unit produces. First the install was done such that the pipes coming into the home were touching the wood framing in the wall of my home. This added to the very loud vibration noise when the unit was working at high capacity heating. Even after they stuffed some padding into the hole, the sound remains. I first thought there was a helicopter hovering over my house. The vibrations are like those that you hear when an airplane goes over your area. It wakes me up at night even though my bedroom is 30 feet away from unit. It is almost impossible to watch anything on TV or read in my family room which is located on the adjacent wall to where the heat pump is installed. I never had such a problem with the previous unit I had for 17 years. Local dealer did a firmware update saying the compressor was running at too high an rpm in heating mode. Did not help. Now they called saying they have a new sound insulator cover for the compressor. They installed it and it hardly helps. The noise level is still 15 db higher than what the manufacturer says (54db). The cover does nothing to change the vibration of the unit, it just decreases the pitch of the compressor noise. Have called Trane and they won't help at all, despite having registered my warranty upon purchase. Buyer beware! Nothing good about this Trane!
"Very Satisfied Owner"
I enjoy this heat pump very, very much. I have never had a problem with my Trane XV20i. I like the variable speeds and the TruComfort systems. However, it can be noisy sometimes, as I can hear it while I am laying in bed. Yes, I would indeed recommend this to a friend, and would buy from Trane again in the future.
Comments regarding the XV20i on HVAC forums seem to be mostly positive, with a post on hvac-talk.com saying that it is much quieter than a Carrier Greenspeed unit. In another post on the same site asking for opinions on the same units, though, the majority of members found the Greenspeed to be the better unit.
