The Trane XR15 is a high-efficiency heat pump that offers up to 16.00 SEER and 9.5 HSPF. A DuraTuff non-corrosive basepan allows for quick and easy drainage, while galvanized louvered panels and a baked-on powder paint prevent rust from forming. The Climatuff compressor is known for its durability and a sound-reduction insulator helps to provide quiet operation. The unit runs on chlorine-free, environmentally-friendly R-410A refrigerant.
But a 3 1/2 ton XR15 in 2010. Coil has gone bad. Trane won't stand behind the warranty. Thought I was buying a superior product with a superior warranty. I was wrong. Trane will never see any of my money again.

We spent almost $9,000 on this product and it has been nothing but trouble. It has needed repair every few months and the labor charges are not covered under warranty after the first 12 months. Now I just learned that the next repair will cost me over $800 and this heat pump is only 18 months old (and has only been used about 9 months). Probably the single worst purchase in my 66 years on the planet.

My 2.5 ton Trane xr15 15 Seer Heat Pump Split System was installed in March 2014 and has run fine until recently. In May 2017 I had the unit serviced as I do annually. Eleven days later there was no cooling from the unit. The technician diagnosed a sticking txv valve and leak in the evaporator coil. This was repaired. In August the fan in the air handler began to make a throbbing noise upon startup. This can be quite loud and can cause the lower section of the air handler to vibrate considerably. It is intermittent. My current technician from H.E. Smith Company Inc. Is unable to determine the cause of this sound and vibration. System cools but sounds like it's beating itself to pieces.

Trane Whole House Pump Unit installed May 2016

Model no. 4TWR5030G1000ca, Serial no. 16075mfh4f November 11 2016:'blown capacitor at six months' service. March 30 2017: fan blade falls off at 10 month's service. May 8 2017:'fan motor fails after one year. Although covered under warranty, would not buy Trane again. Specifying a better capacitor and designing a fan with a 5-cent set screw or cotter pin so that it doesn't come flying off seems like a cheap fix to avoid these headaches in a durable good install costing $5,000 that's supposed to last 10-20 years.

Bought this unit in 2007. It was professionally installed and has worked flawlessly for nearly 10 years. Annual maintenance has been the only cost and unit has helped lower my energy bill.
Comments on the XR15 are generally positive. Consumers on both boardreader.com and gardenweb.com have mentioned concerns about the unit’s ability to control humidity. There were concerns from writers on both sites about the sound level of the XR15, but most consumers seemed to find the unit very quiet.
XR15 Warranty
Registration is required within 60 days of installation to activate the warranty. The Trane XR15 comes with a 10-year limited warranty on the compressor, outdoor coil and internal functioning parts.
