The Trane XR14 is an energy efficient electric heat pump with a 14.00 SEER rating and an HSPF of up to 8.20. The XR14 features Climatuff compressors and a Spine Fin outdoor coil. Galvanized steel louvered panels help protect the unit from the elements. Weatherguard fasteners and baked-on powder paint help resist rust and corrosion, and the DuraTuff base pan will not crack, warp or corrode. The XR14 provides compressor sound insulators which help keep sound levels between 71-76 decibels during operation, and an electronic demand defrost feature eliminates unnecessary defrost cycles.
I replaced a 21-year-old Trane xe1000 that was leaking r22. It could be repaired but was not worth it at that age and as it used phased out refrigerant. The x14 cools much better. Electric bill is about 40% less. $5200 cost for the xr14 installed. There have been no problems in the year and a half.

Day 5, my old Coleman HVAC unit never heated or cooled the other end of the house, which might have been caused by faulty installation, but the Trane employees seemed to seal up issues the caused a loss of heat and air. It took them less than 6 hours to pull out my old unit and install the new unit. So far I'm happy. I hope to report back here and explain the difference in my electric bill which is always $300 to $400 a month.

"Do not get a Trane"

Very Unsatisfied
Three service calls in the first 7 months. The last one shorted out the fan motor and the compressor. Trane has an insurance company to handle the warranty. They should have replaced the unit. They refused and replaced the parts with after market parts. When dealing with warranty work, you do not work with Trane. It is an insurance company, who has no interest in helping you. They just read from a script. It has been the worst experience I have ever had. I even tried to contact the parent company, Ingersoll Rand, and got no response. Don't waste your money

"Eight Failures in 4-1/2 years"

Very Unsatisfied
Bought an entire Trane system, ac/heat pump/air handler, model xr14, 4- 1/2 years ago and have had eight breakdowns and many replaced parts. The warranty is for 5 years, so I'll be screwed with high costs soon. Wrote to president of Trane, David Pannier, and have been ignored. Trane is an example of low-quality junk.

"Air Handler Leaks Air: Company Calls It "Designed To""
2.0 rating
Somewhat Unsatisfied
This is a review of Trane air handlers in general because it applies to all models. The molded body of the air handler with the walls filled with insulating goo is a good idea. The only problem is that, there are large leaks of air from the front panel of the air handler and other areas. The air leak around the drainage pipe. There is leak where the front panel is screwed on because the gaskets are designed poorly. There is leak where the electric conduit goes into the unit. The installer said he cannot seal it any better and pointed to a sticker on the unit which says, "unit is designed to leak some air". A cop out excuse by the manufacturer for a bad design. Why would a company leave any leak whatsoever from the panel if it can be easily fixed. Of course, they would have to change the mold of their product which is not easy to do. Since this design is common to all of their air handler models, I assume they all have this problem. So far (had the unit installed only a month ago), this is the only gripe I have. Waste of energy and money!
In most online reviews of the XR14 in HVAC forums, the unit is compared with other heat pumps. A consumer on gardenweb.com asks which unit to install, a used XR14 or a lower end Rheem unit. Most reviewers said the XR14 is a better unit but there is a risk in buying a used model. On a different thread on gardenweb.com, a consumer states that he is replacing a Carrier unit and chose the XR14 over another Trane model because of the quieter operation. And in yet another thread on gardenweb.com, the XR14 was chosen by most reviewers over a similar Carrier unit, mainly because of the warranty.
