The XR13 heat pump, currently produced by Trane, can achieve a SEER rating of up to 14.50 and an HSPF of up to 8.50. Trane categorizes the XR13 as one of its "high efficiency" heat pumps, a category that sits just below the manufacturer's "super efficiency" and "ultra efficiency" labels. The XR13 uses R-410A refrigerant. Trane's XR13 is lower in cost than the XR15 and the XB14, but similar in efficiency ratings.
New dual-fuel heat pump/furnace in 2007 (xr90,xr13). Installing/servicing dealer is no longer a Trane dealer. Evaporator coil failed – major leak. Trane unable or unwilling to supply a replacement coil to the dealer. It's in stock in parts center locally, but Trane won't release one from there for warranty work to non-dealer. We've been without heat/air for 2 weeks and it appears that the only option will be to replace the $6k system with another brand. Our first and last experience with Trane.
A question is asked on gardenweb.com regarding the Trane XR13. A homeowner has been provided a quote for, specifically, the 2.5 ton XR13. An expert responds that this unit is probably too large for the home size mentioned; two experts recommend that if the questioner does purchase this unit, he should make sure it includes a variable-speed air handler for greater comfort, and savings in electricity.
Another homeowner posts on hvac-talk.com about several quotes he received on a new heat pump; the quotes include the Trane XR13. Once again, an expert states that the homeowner should request a variable-speed air handler with this model. The contractor notes that it will increase the price, but will be worth it in the long run due to savings.
A thread on gardenweb.com reveals a homeowner debating with contractors regarding a quote for a Trane system, including the XR13 heat pump, and a Bryant system. An expert concludes that the Trane system is better than the Bryant system quoted. The SEER and HSPF numbers are higher on the Trane system than the comparably-priced Bryant system.
