Trane XR13 Heat Pump Overview

The XR13 heat pump, currently produced by Trane, can achieve a SEER rating of up to 14.50 and an HSPF of up to 8.50. Trane categorizes the XR13 as one of its "high efficiency" heat pumps, a category that sits just below the manufacturer's "super efficiency" and "ultra efficiency" labels. The XR13 uses R-410A refrigerant. Trane's XR13 is lower in cost than the XR15 and the XB14, but similar in efficiency ratings.

"Not worth it"

I purchased a Trane HVAC system 9 years ago, had some minor issues from time to time and now the condenser coil blew. Now I am purchasing another brand. Will not use Trane again.

"Trane heat pump is a very solid heat pump."

I have had my heat pump for around 8 years, since the very beginning of my moving into my town house. It has been a very reliable unit especially given that it is a lower end Trane and relatively affordable. The heat pump does sometimes freeze up when the temperature is below 30 degrees outside. I believe that this is a common problem among heat pumps though, which is why they sometimes are not used in cooler climates. I live in Georgia so it really does not get that cold very often. The defrost mode on it is very loud. It sounds like a jet engine. I had to replace a capacitor in it, and I had a drain line clog. Overall I would give the unit 4.5/5 stars. I would certainly recommend to a friend. It has been a steady and reliable heat pump/ air conditioning unit over time.

"Quality Product"

We actually purchased this pump recently, within the last year or so, because our old one stopped working. This model uses much less energy than our previous pump. We have not really had any complaints being that it is so new, and we have not had any trouble with operating or maintaining it. We have not had to make any service calls for repair or replacement and I believe the warranty is still valid in the event that we have any trouble. Overall we are pleased at this point. I would recommend this or a similar model from Trane to others, and I would repurchase another product through Trane.

"Pure junk"

2 compressors, 2 outside cooling fans and multiple electrical parts. This is just pure junk. I would not buy one again. Trane in Tax couldn't care less.

"Trane XR13 Rating"

Had a 4 year old Trane xr13 unit and only problems with. After 1 year starter solenoid died after 4 year solenoid died again and compressor died. Warranty on parts only but labor to get a warrantied compressor istallation $ 2,200.00. Trane customer service not responsive to e- mails about other questions and this case. After talking to customer service on the phone was tld that warranty is only for partial parts. Not worth to pay higher price for Trane because all it is is good advertisment but maintenance / repair cost higher than other units. Never buy a trane again.

Other XR13 Reviews

A question is asked on gardenweb.com regarding the Trane XR13. A homeowner has been provided a quote for, specifically, the 2.5 ton XR13. An expert responds that this unit is probably too large for the home size mentioned; two experts recommend that if the questioner does purchase this unit, he should make sure it includes a variable-speed air handler for greater comfort, and savings in electricity.

Another homeowner posts on hvac-talk.com about several quotes he received on a new heat pump; the quotes include the Trane XR13. Once again, an expert states that the homeowner should request a variable-speed air handler with this model. The contractor notes that it will increase the price, but will be worth it in the long run due to savings.

A thread on gardenweb.com reveals a homeowner debating with contractors regarding a quote for a Trane system, including the XR13 heat pump, and a Bryant system. An expert concludes that the Trane system is better than the Bryant system quoted. The SEER and HSPF numbers are higher on the Trane system than the comparably-priced Bryant system.

XR13 Warranty

Trane offers a 10-year limited warranty on the compressor of the XR13. The outdoor coil also carries a 10-year limited warranty. The same warranty applies to the internal parts. The customer must register the XR13 to activate the warranty within 60 days of installation.
