The Trane XR11 is a discontinued mid-efficiency heat pump with an efficiency of 11.5 SEER and 9.5 HSPF. Corrosion-resistant Weatherguard fasteners, full-side louvered panels with baked-on powder paint, and a DuraTuff rust-proof basepan protected the unit from rust and corrosion. The ClimaTuff compressor provided quiet, efficient operation. The XR11 heat pump used R22 refrigerant.
We have had this heat pump since 2004. It's never missed a beat. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer. If it gets below 34 degrees, it runs almost continuously to keep the house at 65 degrees, but I expected that. I build a pellet stove fire. Doesn't get that cold here very often.

We spent $2900 in 2003 on a new Trane air handler & compressor. The coil in the air handler went out in 2010, after the warranty expired of coarse. The new coil ran us $1025 parts & labor. We had a freon leak on the supply line shortly after that which cost around $100 to repair, numerous other switches, etc have had to be replaced over the last 11 years. The compressor just went out & the air handler was near the end blowing out humid air. I replaced the entire system yesterday with a Bryant system & so far it seems to be cooling well. Whatever brand you choose expect issues of some kind, these manufacturers are out to make money any way they can.
I had a xr 11 unit installed when I made my screened in porch into a sun room. So it is one unit for one room, about 300 sq. ft. Unit installed in June, 2005. First compressor replaced under warranty July, 2008. Second compressor replaced June, 2011 with me paying $880 for labor. Now I have a bad TXV valve which will cost $1,200 for parts and labor. I called Trane on Dec 10, 2011 said would look into it. Called again December 20, still no determination. Called January 4, 2012, still nothing. Called January 19 and was told the file was closed on January 9, but did not contact me. This is a piece of junk. My other units, not Trane, have worked for 20 years without a problem. Not only is the product bad, the customer service is just as bad. I'll never buy another

My Trane xr11 heat pump broke weeks after installation and has needed repairs too numerous to count since then. Compressor motor, fan motor and reversing valve have had to be replaced several times. I live in Fl, and when the reversing valve sticks, it blows out heat in the 95 degree summer weather! Trane consumer relations has been completely unresponsive to the problem. This product is a pure lemon and Trane should be embarassed to have produced it, and shame on them for taking advantage of the American consumer by selling such a piece of junk!
"XR11 Heat Pump – Split System"
Xr11 compressor failed after 4.5 years. Lucky, I have the Trane warranty (1-5-10). 1 means one year parts and labor, 5 means five years parts, 10 means ten years on the compressor. So, I get a free compressor – sort of – the final repair bill is projected to be $1,000+ to diagnose the problem, repair said problem. Not happy!
Other XR11 Reviews
Several posts concerning the XR11 on HVAC forums mention faulty compressors. Consumers on gardenweb.com stated that their compressors were under warranty, but were upset that the cost of labor was not covered by the warranty. Several consumers on diychatroom.com and doityourself.com have had problems with capacitors, which is relatively simple and inexpensive to fix.
Product registration is required for maximum warranty coverage. The warranty for the Trane XR11 heat pump is comprised of the following:
10-year limited warranty on the compressor
10-year limited warranty on the outdoor coil
5-year limited warranty on internal functioning parts
