The Trane XL20i is discontinued and has a rating of up to 19.00 SEER and 9.0 HSPF. The XL20i features two-stage cooling and heating and has a multi-speed motor that changes speeds to maximize comfort. The WeatherGuard top protects components, and the DuraTuff base pan is rust-proof. The XL20 has a sound insulator on the compressors to provide quiet performance. When matched with a Trane variable-speed indoor unit, the XL20i gives greater humidity control when cooling and provides warmer air during heating start up. By running the fan at a slower speed during start up, temperature variances are reduced, providing optimum home comfort.
I have owned this heat pump for 1 year. It is working very good so far. The only thing I did not like about it was the price and it's a little big. I have not had to do any work on it up until this point. I would definitely buy this brand again. Trane is well known for their many products and is a great company to buy a heat pump from. Dealing with them has been good and easy. They have great financing available.

"Totally unreliable system"
1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied
I have had this unit for approximately 21 months and average a service call a month. A lot of my problems were due to sloppy/unprofessional installation. It is so unreliable I have a neighbor check on the unit when we are out of town and arrange a service call while traveling(done this twice). I thought I was buying quality but this is far from it. If things keep going as they are, I will likely have to replace the system with something more reliable and eat the cost. This is the worst investment I've ever made. It appears almost anything will stop a Trane!

This is the worst investment I've ever made. I will not ever buy a Trane product again and don't recommend this company. My unit was installed in June, 2014. It has not worked as a heater most of this past winter. The dealer has made numerous trips to my residence to try to fix the unit but has not been able to solve the problems. The thermostat constantly reminds me that the unit is not functioning but there seems to be no solution. Total waste of money.

"Can't get correct part"
1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied
Heat Pump went out on Sunday Evening after error message came up on thermostat. Error messages seems to come up approximately every 6 months. Now in -0 deg. Weather, contractor says can't get part in because factory does not have the part. Now heating on Emergency Heat and Trane will not help with power bill. Unit a little over 4 yr. Old, Purchased in November, 2009. The part needed is a suction line trans fuser which relates the pressures. Will not recommend trane at all!

"Never again"

I'd never buy another demanding, expensive machine like this. Simple furnaces, simple filters. Complicated furnaces mean complicated and difficult computer reminders, error codes, expensive service calls, and filter removals and vacuuming nonsense.
Based on comments from online HVAC forums, both consumers and professionals regard the XL20i as a good unit. A consumer on hvac-talk.com complained about the XL20i's ability to control humidity levels. Most other comments, from both homeowners and professionals, disagreed with the consumer and praised the XL20i.
