Had to replace the coil after 4 years. The 2 service calls in the next 2 years. Had a Carrier unit for 20+ years and only 2 service calls.

"Will Last the LONGEST"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

I've worked on every make for years and knew I wanted Trane when I replaced mine 9 years ago. The issue I believe is that Trane is selling their equipment to just about anyone with a license and, as we all know, or should know, the installation is critical. If installed correctly by trained technicians, Trane equipment will outlast the competion hands down. Trane engineers and manufactures their own compressors, use all aluminum coils (both indoor and outdoor), and have the least call back/warranty repair. The bad reviews are either bogus or from individuals dealing with a poor installation.

Every major component of my heat pump (except evaporator coil) has been replaced and the system is less than 7 years old. This includes compressor, condenser coil, fan motor, reversing valve and capacitors plus numerious refrigerant leaks repaired. One repair technician commented that he had never experienced so many problems with a system this new. Avoid the Trane wreck.

"Don't buy a TRANE."

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

I am looking at my $205.00 bill for my third service call on my less than two year old trane heat pump, and thought I would try to help others make a good decision about whether or not to buy a trane heat pump. Don't!! I was warned by a friend in the hvac business that a large percentage of the service calls he made were on trane units, but at that time Trane was offering a very good same as cash purchase plan so I gave it a go. Got the extended warranty which, as it turns out, was a good idea because the parts were free, however labor is not. I have never been a big porponent of extended warranties, but if you must buy a trane, I highly recommend it because there is a high probability that you will need it.

"Made in China junk"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

Own 8 various Trane units installed on 8 condos. Earlier made in America units are great, newer made in China units are complete junk. Trane knows the newer Chinese made units are junk and give all sorts of excuses instead of honoring their warranty. If you have an older American made Trane unit hang on to it as long as possible. If you are shopping for a new unit, stay away from Trane, they have gone from excellent to absolute junk.

Some consumers, on the other hand, aren’t as complementary of the XL16i. Many folks on believe the efficiency numbers aren’t good enough for a high-end unit and would like to see high performance for the cost of the unit. Another unhappy customer on complains of costly repairs and multiple parts breaking.

A thread on reveals a discussion between a homeowner and two experts about the Trane XL16i for a home in North Carolina. The experts agree that the XL16i would not be the best heat pump for this homeowner. The contractors mention that the HSPF rating should be higher, and the unit is not compatible with Trane’s optional humidity-reducing equipment, which would be a bonus for this location. Both experts recommend the Trane XL15i in this situation.

A poster on asks about the Trane XL16i, as he is considering installing a new heat pump instead of repairing his old one. Once again, experts are concerned about the heating capacity for this particular heat pump. The location is Ohio, which has many cold days during the year. Here, the contractors recommend the Trane XL15i or another 14 to 15 SEER unit.

A recent post on is written by a potential Trane customer. He is considering the XL16i for his home in Florida. The experts mention the lack of humidity removal by the XL16i; one contractor suggests a variable-speed air handler or switching to the XL15i for better control of excessive humidity.
