"Horrible equipment"

1.0 rating

Bought a Trane heat pump. Replaced both compressors the first year, replaced whole unit second year, one new compressor a year later. Replaced two more the next couple of years. The fan motor went out, replaced the circuit board, replaced fuses and capacitor. Now both compressors are shot. Fortunately for Trane, 2 months out of warranty – they told me tough luck! Won't even talk about doing something. I'm a contractor and will never recommend a Trane to my customers! Horrible company! They don't care about customers at all. There are many more price conscious companies out there that are small enough to care about their product and reputation!

"Bad move buying a Trane"

My unit is so noisy at 80 to 90 decibel, it sounds like a train. Very bad unit. Do not buy any Trane unit, they just lie. Very quiet, they say, but that is not true.

"Loud running noise"

This is a very bad unit. I will never ever buy a Trane unit. I called Trane many times but they would not do anything about the very loud noise this unit puts out. They said they all make this kind of noise. Please do yourself a favor, buy another manufacturer's unit, not a Trane.

"Huge Mistake!"

Drank the Cool aid and replaced a 38 year old Carrier system with a 'top-of-the- line' Trane. Just told my 24-month-old heat pump needs replacement. Trane will honor the 10 year parts warranty but I was told today, unfortunately, that no replacement exists anywhere in the usa and it will be 'at least' 2 weeks to build and ship one. Did I mention that today is 7/29/14 and I live in sw Virginia? I am pretty hot right now and will only be getting hotter as August arrives!

"Heat & air system"

I purchased this unit thinking I was buying the absolute best unit available and paid almost double what some units would have cost. Additionally, I have spent almost $1000 in the first year of operation. Still, it does not work properly and runs all the time. I have tried without success to contact the company.

Many folks on believe the efficiency numbers aren’t good enough for a high-end unit and would like to see high performance for the cost of the unit. Another unhappy customer on complains of costly repairs and multiple parts breaking.

A thread on reveals a discussion between a homeowner and two experts about the Trane XL16i for a home in North Carolina. The experts agree that the XL16i would not be the best heat pump for this homeowner. The contractors mention that the HSPF rating should be higher, and the unit is not compatible with Trane’s optional humidity-reducing equipment, which would be a bonus for this location. Both experts recommend the Trane XL15i in this situation.

A poster on asks about the Trane XL16i, as he is considering installing a new heat pump instead of repairing his old one. Once again, experts are concerned about the heating capacity for this particular heat pump. The location is Ohio, which has many cold days during the year. Here, the contractors recommend the Trane XL15i or another 14 to 15 SEER unit.

A recent post on is written by a potential Trane customer. He is considering the XL16i for his home in Florida. The experts mention the lack of humidity removal by the XL16i; one contractor suggests a variable-speed air handler or switching to the XL15i for better control of excessive humidity.
