The Trane XL15i is a discontinued energy-efficient, single-stage heat pump. The XL15i has ratings of up to 16.25 SEER and 9.7 HSPF, and is the quietest of all Trane's single-stage heat pump systems. A DuraTuff non-corrosive base pan allows for quick and easy drainage, while the WeatherGuard II top protects the unit from damage and a baked-on powder paint prevents rust from forming. The Climatuff compressor, known for its durability and efficiency, is still the only one used by Trane in residential systems.
I purchased two Trane 3 Ton 15 SEER systems in April 2013. One of the systems has consistently experienced significant issues and over the last 8 months I have had technicians out to my home more than 15 times. The evaporator coil has been replaced twice, the unit has had the eev replaced at least three times, refrigerant added, you name it they have done it. When I contacted Trane corporate to ask them to help me deal with the issue and potentially replace what is clearly a faulty unit (as I did not have technicians on-site the numerous other times the unit would require resetting) it took multiple days to get a call back. They are not willing to send a field rep and are clearly not standing behind their products. Getting through to their customer service required that I call them back and though I was told I would be contacted they failed to do so consistently to help resolve the issue. All and all, the product is clearly not adequate. Imagine if your car broke down and required that many repairs in such less than a year's time. The customer service experience was even worse.

Worst product I ever purchased. It produces approximately 1/2 of the (their) rated heating output at 47 degrees. The gas pressures and temperatures are supposedly good, expansion valves have been changed, no effect. No answer as to why it won't produce. Zero cooperation from Trane.

My 3 year old Trane heat pump needed a new coil already. Glad that I bought the labor warranty. I bought Trane thinking that they are high quility, but I was wrong.

Bought this Trane heat pump 3.5 years ago because it was the best on the market. The $700.00 fan motor was just replaced in the middle of a heat wave (no ac) for 8 days. The 10 year warranty did cover the cost of everything but air freight ($45.00) all in all not impressed with Trane heat pumps so far. Hopefully I don't have this problem every 3 to 4 years.

My 1 1/2 year old Trane heat pump needed a new compressor already. Trane supplied the new compressor for free, but it cost me $661.00 in labor to get it replaced . My old Trane wasn't much better, but I was told over and over that it was the exception. Apparently that wasn't true. This will be my last Trane. That's for sure. I sure hope my new Trane furnace is better .
Online comments and reviews of the XL15i appear to be quite positive. A few consumers on doityourself.com noticed frost and ice buildup on the outside compressor during cold weather, but no buildup on inside and the units continue to work correctly. In a comparison of two Trane units, the XL15i and the XB13, several professionals gave favorable reviews to both but most seemed to prefer the XL15i.
XL15i Warranty
Registration is required within 60 days of installation to activate the warranty. The Trane XL15i comes with a 12-year limited warranty on the compressor and a 10-year limited warranty on the outdoor coil and internal functioning parts. An optional extended warranty which can pay for labor and other costs not covered by the manufacturer's limited warranty is available.
