Trane XL14i Heat Pump Overview

The Trane XL 14i split system heat pump is an energy-efficient product with several brand-named components. Available in 1.5 to 5 ton capacities, the now-discontinued XL 14i has up to 15.25 SEER and 9.6 HSPF. The unit runs on R22 refrigerant.

Equipped with a Climatuff compressor that has an internal temperature and pressure protector, the XL 14i also employs an aluminum Spine Fin coil. The coil is completely wrapped in protective material, making it resistant to corrosion, and has all-aluminum brazen joints. A DuraTuff base made of composite material allows for quick and complete drainage and the WeatherGuard II top protects the unit. The unit's exterior is coated with a glossy, corrosion-resistant finish and the unit is topped with a XL seacoast shield.

Enclosed by a Quick-Sess cabinet, the refrigerant connections and coil are fully protected, yet because the cabinet offers top and fan removal access is simple. The sound production from the XL 14i is dampened by the low airflow resistance, the insulated compressor and the integrated fan orifice.

Add-ons such as indoor/outdoor thermostats are available. Consumers can discuss additional options with their Trane dealer.

"Why do people lie, are they salespeople perhaps?"

5.0 rating

In response to all of the obsurd comments about trane heatpumps being unreliable and extremely high priced, I have to say that the notes seem to be by people not knowing anything about trane, but merely are trying to badmouth the product. Beware anyone that praises another brand in the same breath. They may or may not be salespeople trying to mislead people towards what they sell. I read one review about a guy who paid about $22000 for an xl16 heat pump and had to replace the main compressor twice. The xl16 heat pump only has one compressor. It is a single 2 stage compressor. The XL19i or XL20i heatpumps have 2 seperate compressors, but the 16 seer units are all single compressor units. If someone is bashing a unit that they have had to repair, shouldn't they know what they have had to repair. My XL14i works great as have all trane heat pumps that I've run across. I am an installer/service tech myself and have never had any major problems with anything trane. If I do though the tech support team is extremely supportive, and respond same day. The flat top on the unit saves me much grief, when freezing rain is causing fan blades on other heatpumps to freeze when they shut- off. Simple design, but a huge benefit.

"Trane Heat Pump Problematic"

2.0 rating
Somewhat Unsatisfied

First winter with my new Trane system (Furnace and XL14i heat pump) the heat pump compressor failed after 1 month. Second winter unit worked fine with a set point of 20 degrees F. Two weeks into my third cold weather season and the heat pump is not working properly. Service technician will checkout the unit this week. I purchased the service agreement so have had the unit serviced both spring and fall. I rated the system Somewhat Unsatisfied because my air conditioner and furnace have worked as advertised and saved me money. If only the heat pump/compressor was more reliable.

I had a XL14i trane unit installed April 2006. It has not really been the greatest but I have dealt with it. At the present I am sitting in a hot house due to not cooling. It is impossible to get someone to come look at in in a timely manner due to their schedule. And of all things, there isn't even a phone number to contact anyone at the Trane Company. I debated on buying a Carrier or a Trane three years ago and supposedly Trane was a good unit. Boy I was fooled. Model #2twx4024b1000aa. Thanks for nothing.

My Trane XL14i with a 4tee3f31 has been flawless and made our lives much better. Mt previous Goodman was a piece of junk( 4 repairs in 1st year, coil, compressor, contactor, capacitor) I work in construction and thought since I seen alot of goodman s they would be ok. Wrong, you see them alot because their cheap! And installed by less than competent technicians in my opinion, they were very ignorant of their own system. Get a quality Trane heat pump and use a Quality company, not pick up truck Joe!

"Proud of my Gibson"

Very Unsatisfied

I had a Gibson installed in 2007 after eight years of using York. Not to bash York, but I had more than 30 documented calls to the installer. After three years of their incompetence and inability to fix the system, I gave up. They insisted that heat pumps can only do what they can do. Worst experience possible. I love my Gibson and the installer seemed to do a very thorough job. Go Gibson!

Other XL14i Reviews

Online comments about Tranes XL 14i are generally positive. However, when a consumer on doityourself.com asks for feedback about the value of this unit, the responses are mixed. Some contractors consider it a good unit, others suggest higher efficiency Trane modelsnotably, the XL15ifor this heat-only installation in order for the consumer to get more bang for his buck. In addition, at least one HVAC professional suggests that Tranes products, despite their high-end promotional material and bigger price tags, achieve relatively the same performance as other brands, given a quality installation is done.

XL14i Warranty

Tranes XL 14i heat pump comes with a limited 10-year warranty on the compressor, outdoor coil and functional parts. An optional extended warranty is available for additional coverage including labor, refrigerant and other parts for the length of the agreement.
