Trane XB13 Heat Pump Overview

Trane’s XB13 is a standard efficiency heat pump offering up to 14.5 SEER and 8.5 HSPF. This series is available in six models ranging from 1.5 to 5 tons and with cooling capacities from 17,000 up to 58,500 BTU/H. According to the manufacturer, all units and components are tested before shipment.

Trane promotes this unit’s durable operation, in part thanks to the company’s Climatuff compressor and an all-aluminum spine fin coil designed for efficient heat transfer. It is finished with baked-on powder paint.

A full line of accessories, including Trane’s air filtration system, thermostats, humidifiers and energy recovery ventilators, also are available for this unit.

So far I have spent over $5,700.00 and it is broke again like my wallet! 1 day old and the fan motor stop working. Replaced the voltage regulator; defrost board; sensors; coil & TXV valve; and guess what? It's broke now. Sorry products for your money!

"Trane XB13 Heat Pump w/ Variable Air Handler and 802 Thermostat"

Bought unit 4/23/10, the unit is worthless. Called and called Techs who kept putting freon in it. Told me that was normal, till it went out of warranty. I have bought heaters to warm the house in the winter and now I am going to buy window units to cool with. The Trane is of no use.

"Trane – Absolute Junk!"

Installed on December 27, 2010. First compressor went out in March, 2011. Compressor replaced under warranty. Second compressor went out in June, Trane authorized replacement of entire unit only if I paid to replace the A-coil, which I paid to replace. Third compressor went out in November and it took me a month to get the installer to come back out to inspect and decide the compressor was out again. In the mean time, the emergency heat has been on along with space heaters. Installer tried to blame it on my electrical service, but I've had 2 licensed electrical contractors inspect and tell me there is nothing wrong with the electric. Unit is now sitting unhooked, contractor refuses to hook it back up and all bills have been paid. I guess it's time for an attorney.

I have a thrifty-six month -old heat pump and complete new system. Two days ago it went out. I called the company that installed the system and who I pay each year to service it. Was told the compressor went out and it's under warranty, but I need to pay to have it installed. ($1000.00). Shouldn't the manufacture be responsible for repairing their faulty merchandise that was purchased in good faith? Feel ripped off. Just finished paying for this install.

Other XB13 Reviews

The Trane XB13 has received a mixture of positive and negative reviews around the web. While this system is a basic, builder-grade model, several contractors note the unit is built with a reliable compressor and easy-to-clean coils. Professionals also mention the XB13 is a good fit for a homeowner on a budget in a mild climate, but recommend a higher-efficiency unit for harsher climates.

Despite the positive reviews, some homeowners note the unit’s loud and occasionally inconsistent operation. Common issues include problems with small components malfunctioning and general troubleshooting errors. Shoppers on consumer forums, such as, like the price of the unit, but question whether or not the low price is worth the efficiency savings in the long run.
