New Installation vs Repair

Whether you should repair your furnace or replace it is one of the most commonly asked questions of HVAC professionals. The answer of course is different for each homeowner. Age, upkeep and how much you use it can all make a difference. However, there are a few basics to keep in mind that will help you make the best decision now and going forward.

Financial Tip: Follow The 5,000 Rule
Multiply the age of the equipment by the repair cost, and if that exceeds $5,000, then replace the unit. If less, go ahead and repair it.

Repair Your Furnace:

  • If it’s under 15 years old.
  • If it’s performing consistently.
  • If rated 87% AFUE or higher.

Replace Your Furnace:

  • If it’s over 15 years old.
  • If requires multiple repairs in last two years.
  • If energy bills increase suddenly.
  • If rated lower than 56% AFUE.

How we got these prices

The prices featured here represent the most common average prices nationwide of each Trane product. Prices may vary in your area. Unit Cost refers to the product price only. Installed Cost includes the product price and the national average installation price.

A note about installed cost: Installation prices may increase 20-30% depending on where you live. If your project requires new ductwork, the installation cost will increase $1,500 – $2,000.

What factors affect furnace pricing?

Because no two homes and home heating needs are exactly the same, the total installation cost of a new furnace will be different from place to place. Here are the factors that can affect the cost of installing a new furnace. If you want a true cost estimate for your home, talk to a local pro.

Local Climate and Region

If you live in the North, the heating capacity of your furnace needs larger than a similar sized home in the South where the winters aren’t as severe.

Home Size and Construction

A large home will need a larger capacity HVAC system or multiple systems compared to a smaller home – which will increase your total installation costs. Also, a well insulated home retains warm or cool air and may not need as large a system as a poorly insulated home.

Project Complexity

If your furnace installation is extra challenging or requires custom parts or retrofitting, your costs will go up. Examples include installing a furnace in a hard to reach or small space or in a historic home that needs updates.

Evaluating your home’s ductwork is part of any new installation because poor ductwork can negate all the energy savings features of a new furnace or air conditioner. Adding new ductwork can add $1,000 – $5,000 to a project depending on the size of home.

XC95m Warranty

The heat exchanger in this model comes with a limited lifetime warranty. The other parts carry a ten-year warranty. Both warranties can be extended for an additional cost, and you can also purchase transferability (so that future owners of your home may qualify for the warranty). To qualify for either warranty, you need to register the furnace within sixty days of buying it.

When should I repair my furnace?

You should repair your furnaces if it’s under 15 years old, it’s performing consistently, and if rated 87% AFUE or higher.

When should I replace my furnace

You should fully replace your furnace if it’s over 15 years old, it has required multiple repairs in last two years, your energy bills increase suddenly, or if your furnace is rated lower than 56% AFUE.

"Best of the best"

Bought an XC95m furnace, CleanEffects Air Cleaner and XL16i A/C unit. What an awesome system! Our gas budgeted dropped from $220/mth to $175/mth and electric budget dropped form $190/mth to $120/mth. Its an expensive set-up but we don’t plan on moving from this house so we will re-coop the investment. Our prior furnace(Carrier) was bleeding us dry with repair costs so we needed to upgrade anyway. Trane system is quite, efficient, keeps temperature steady, doesn’t seem to struggle no matter the outside temp – its been a winner. The CleanEffects is amazing!. The amount of crap it pulls from the air is awesome. I clean it monthly because it seems to pull so much out of the air. My wife even notices that we have much less dust settling on the furniture. Love it!

Purchased a entire Trane set-up, XC95m furnace, Trane CleanEffects air cleaner, Trane humidifier and Trane XL16i a/c. Replaced a Carrier set- up that went bad in 8 years and was nothing but a pain. The difference is amazing, I barely hear it running, gas bill has gone down over 30% and the unit is made like a tank. The temperature swings are non-existent, about 1.5 degrees. I had some cold spots in the house in some upper bedrooms which somehow this system removed them. It’s expensive — I dropped $11,000 which was hard to do, but we priced other options and a new carrier set-up was the same price and some other lesser known brands were only about $1,500 cheaper. I would make sure you get the best installer you can, it makes all the difference. Make sure they do a load analysis on your house, they found our return ducts too small for the a/c we had and the furnace BTUs too small for the size of house. We paid the price of having a poor installer the last time.

Had a new Trane Furnace/ Trane Clean Effects, A/c and Coil installed. Replaced on 9 year old Lennox system. Hated the Lennox, always had problems. The new system is a fully modulating gas value and I have yet to hear the furnace kick on full. There are NO temperature swings in the house, just like the installer said. It keeps the temperature so close to the setting is unbelievable. I’ve also notice that with the old system I used to get condensation on the windows when it gets really cold outside, no more – I’m guessing its related to the temperature swing being so minimal it doesn’t need to ‘blast’ humidified air into the house.

Had X95m Gas furnace installed two years ago. Could not wish for more. Its quite and my heating bills dropped by 35% and cooling bill dropped a whopping 45%. Installer was great, did follow-ups to verify performance and our satisfaction. Had a 6 year old Carrier System replaced that was nothing but problems from day 1. Make sure you find a very good installer, a great furnace installed poorly will perform poorly. Be careful of low-ball prices the same way you would of overpriced products.

Bought an XC95m Furnace, CleanEffect filter and XR15 A/C. Replaced Carrier units that lasted on 8 years. Th key is finding a reputable installer…they completed a thorough analysis and found the return ducts too small for the sized units I had. They explained that it creates issues when the furnace can’t draw the required air. One of the reasons why the old furnace lasted only 8 years. 8 months into the new equipment and everything runs great, seeing an 30% drop in electricity usage and gas is down about 20%. While Trane is expensive it’s a purchase I would make again. Can’t emphasize enough to make sure you find the right installer.
