The Trane YCC is a now-discontinued single-packaged heating and gas/electric cooling system. The manufacturer’s most recent literature for the unit dates to 2003. Offering up to 10 SEER, this model was designed for outdoor installation on the ground or roof, or to be placed in downflow or horizontal configurations. The YCC uses R22 refrigerant.
Available in 1.5- to 5-ton units, this series offers 11 different models varying in size and heating and cooling capacities. Units feature a Climatuff compressor, a baked-on powder paint finish, and corrosion-resistant screws to help maintain durable performance and appearance.
The YCC also is promoted by the manufacturer for its quiet operation, thanks in part to an insulated cabinet intended to dampen operation noise and a two-speed blower motor for swift heating and cooling. Each unit is torture tested by the manufacturer.
This is now about a 15 year unit, but natural gas heat exchanger rusted out. For this area, low heat requirement, premature failure. This is not as good as the old well-built units.
"Trane gas pack"
What I'm most unhappy about are things are not built to last anymore. "Built to Last" is Tranes motto and this unit #ycc042f1mob is not. The heat exchanger is rusting out due to all the condensation of the a/c and we've been warned that it could die any day. We've had this unit serviced every spring and fall; so it's not by neglect that it's dying. As far as repairs, we've only had to replace two things totaling $400. In hind sight, we should have gotten the unit with a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger. We're now in the process of researching a split system.
Other YCC Reviews
There are a few troubleshooting inquiries on websites including fixya.com or askmehelpdesk.com regarding the Trane YCC. Among them, homeowners posting on the former site share similar experiences in which their unit stops heating. For one poster, the gas burner continues to run, and after gently tapping the heat sensor, the unit begins working without further issue. One reviewer has found success solving this problem in most, not all, cases by cleaning the terminals each fall to keep the unit running smoothly.
A homeowner posting on askmehelpdesk.com has an issue, after a recent service call, with the unit blowing lower-than-needed heat. Experts on the site can only advise that the homeowner have the maintenance team return to take a look at this fresh problem.
