The Trane XL16i air conditioner is available in single stage and two stage models and has an efficiency rating of up to 18 SEER. This unit uses R-410A refrigerant, which is healthier for the ozone layer.
The XL16i comes with a Climatuff compressor, and select models come with an advanced fan system and sound insulators on the compressors to provide noise reduction. It has baked on powder paint and Weatherguard fasteners to resist rust, and the DuraTuff base pan resists corrosion rust, and warping. The XL16i qualifies for an Energy Star rating from the US Department of Energy.
All I can say is I have had nothing but trouble with my 4 year old unit – Thank God there is a warranty. So far 2 compressors, one coil, one shorted/burnt out harness and other service calls to get this, at the time, state of the art unit, working. Very happy with my Carrier units we installed in our newly constructed home 3 years ago – have not had one problem or one service call yet.

I spend a small fortune on my energy efficient Trane to save money. Spending a small fortune in repairs. Do yourself a favor: don't buy Trane!

We had this unit installed about 4 years ago. Not exaggerating, we have had about over a dozen service calls. Stay away. We have a second unit for the bedroom side of the house, it is an Amana Elite unit, it has never once had an issue.

"Trane unit sucks! XL16i"

This unit is only 8 years old, we had to repair it from day one! I don't recommend that anyone buy a Trane because they don't work right. This unit was brand new and we spent a lot of money for it. Now I have to replace it with a Carrier unit. So anyone reading this review, I will tell you to think before buying a Trane!

"Trane is the worst"

Never buy Trane anything! They are negligent with a clear lack of concern toward their warranty obligations. Poor quality equipment, poor customer service. I'll never give Trane another chance and my word of mouth advertising will be burning hot just like my house for the last week.
The XL16i received generally mixed reviews on various web forums. Some users on doityourself.com compared it favorably to similar models from Carrier. Other said that the 16i was unnecessarily expensive compared to simpler models like XL14i and XL15i. Trane is cited as a good brand generally on city-data.com.
Users on gardenweb.com also like Trane, and preferred the XL16i to air conditioners from Lennox. But they agreed that the 16i might be unnecessary compared to lower-level models from Trane. Occasional complaints refer to strange noises and adverse effects on humidity.
