The Trane XL1200 is a discontinued residential air conditioning unit offering up to 14 SEER. Trane also sold an XL1200 heat pump. Ranging in 1.5- to 5-ton options, this series was available in seven models varying in size.
This line featured a Climatuff compressor, a quiet 2-speed fan motor, Spine Fin aluminum coils, and a compressor sound shield to help minimize sound levels. The interior components were protected by a louvered cabinet finished in a silver, baked-on powder paint and weathergaurd top. Rust- and corrosion-resistant screws and full-sided louvered panels were additional components of the exterior.
The unit also was equipped with external braze fittings to help keep installation simple, and a side access panel designed for quick maintenance and service. Optional accessories, such as the accompanying Trane thermostat, also were available for this unit.
Trane recommended the following for maintenance:
Clean or replace the filter once a month
Keep the unit free of debris and clear from flowers and shrubs to maximize air flow across the coil
Xl 1200 installed in 1988. one of 3 trane units installed at the same time. if it wasn't for the tax credit on a new unit I would be keeping it as it still cools. anyone want to pick up a used unit for parts, copper or use email me asap.

Had two XL12's installed in new house 20 years ago now. They have been great, efficient and reliable units. One is very quiet while the other is somewhat noisy. Never have figured out why – can only assume one has a non-fatal problem with the compressor. Have heard the newer low end units are not the same quality, but these units are great.

Our trane air conditioner that came with our house was installed in April 1988, it's a Trane XL1200 air conditioner which is a 12 seer, it is extremely cheap to operate and we use the a/c all the time in the summer, and it still works extremely well, just like a new air conditoner, highly recommend trane air conditioners

Purchased a Trane xl 1200 in 2001. Installer returned a month later to install an updated part that I was not aware needed to be replaced. The part was under warranty, no cost to me. Trane handeled it! Now its August 2010. Unit is not cooling. its 105 in Dallas! Called a different service company. Unfornately, the person did not know what he was doing.had to have them come back three times to solve the problem. each time it cost me more money. finally, a diferent tech came out and it ws the drain pan was the problem, not for what I had paid for the other two visits from the tech person.

The unit came brand new installed by a builder in a house that was built for our family in 1996. Never a problem in 10 years that we lived in that house. Reasonable el. bills, not a single service call needed ever, total comfort summer or winter. The only maintenance was replacing the air filter. We had 17 rental properties and on every one of them we had a new a/c unit installed. Couldn't afford Trane, though. Goodman, Tempstar, Carrier, Heil,Amana and some other brands. On every one of them had a problem at least every other year. The Parts were covered, but the labor was outrageous. Got so stressful, that sold off properties one at a time. Currently live in another house with TRANExl1200. Again, very happy! Icy cold air, reasonable bills. Thank you trane! Would recommend very highly for stress -free living! If you can afford it, go with TRANE-through our vast experience with so many other brands nothing compares to these units.
As an older unit (most available information on it dates to 1996) the XL1200 is the subject of several troubleshooting and maintenance inquiries across the web. Homeowner forums such as hvac-talk.com list a variety of issues including instances of the cooling coil dying, the unit’s failure to produce cold air, the compressor’s failure to turn on, and several instances of leaking coils. General maintenance questions, such as how to clean the coils or remove the cover, also are posed.
Aside from troubleshooting issues, homeowners seem generally pleased with the longevity of this unit. Contractors on hvac-talk.com believe that if this unit is installed correctly and properly maintained it should provide at least 15 years of consistent performance.
XL 1200 Warranty
The XL1200 is equipped with a 2-year limited warranty on all components. Trane also offers an additional 10-year limited warranty for the coil and compressor. Optional extended warranties are available through a local Trane contractor.
