The Trane XB16 is an Energy Star rated split system air conditioner with an efficiency rating of up to 16.50 SEER. The unit has a durable single-stage compressor and an all-aluminum Spine Fin coil which provides a superior heat exchanging surface while resisting corrosion. The unit’s zinc-coated fasteners are resistant to corrosion, and the DuraTuff base pan is manufactured to resist rust, corrosion, warping or cracking. The XB16 is protected by full-sided louvered panels with a corrosion-resistant baked-on powder paint finish.
Bad Product! Only 5 years old and have had it totally quit on us, in the worse possible heat, twice. Ugh.. Carrier a/c for me!!!!!!
"Best Central air System That I Have Ever Owned"
I bought my house five years ago. The Trane XB16 was the installed unit in my house. I love it. It runs completely on its own. Iv'e never had to get it repaired or serviced. I actually never even think about it. I stay cool all summer long and warm all winter. It's very self sufficient. I love the fact that I have never had to spend any money on it. The only negative thing that I have to say is when it starts, it makes a loud noise, not terribly loud as if there is something wrong, but loud enough to be annoying when you are trying to go to sleep. The unit is under one of my bedroom windows. But once it's running, it is very quiet, just a normal fan noise that you hear from any central air conditioner.
"Cool When Needed"
The air conditioning unit I have came with the townhouse that I bought in 2006. At the home inspection, the inspector said that it was in great operating condition and had been well-maintained. It is still running great and I have had no problems with it. The only real problem I have is that in a townhouse, with three levels, sometimes the lower levels are cooled great but the upstairs remains about five degrees warmer. This can be corrected fairly well with opening the upstairs vents and closing the vents downstairs. It operates quietly; I cannot hear it running either while I am in the house or outside it. I have never needed to have it repaired or even serviced, although I probably should get a routine maintenance service on it soon. Trane is a trusted brand for heating and air-conditioning and I would not only buy one again but would also highly recommend it to friends and family. Also, there are plenty of licensed Trane dealers in my area should a problem arise or should I need to replace the unit.

"A bit pricey, but keeps up with Florida heat!"
I recently replaced my 10 year old a/c unit after it finally gave up the ghost. I got this unit in the hopes that it would be able to keep up with the blistering South Florida heat, and it does! The Pros: * It's quiet * It's efficient (cut my old electricity bill in half monthly) The Cons: *It's ugly – but then, what outdoor a/c unit looks GOOD? * The indoor thermostat that came with the unit does not use the in-house wiring, but rather is battery operated. So far I've used it for 6 months without having to touch the battery, but I still dislike this feature (though to be fair, the company installing the unit may have had another option for the thermostat and simply failed to tell me due to laziness…I'm guessing it was much simpler for HIM to use this thermostat than wire one in.)

Other XB16 Reviews
While considered a lower-grade unit, most online reviews of the XB16 are positive. A homeowner on hvac-talk.com was concerned about the noise levels of the XB16 his girlfriend was having installed because the unit does not have a sound blanket. However, when the unit was installed he found it to be surprisingly quiet. On gardenweb.com is a post from someone worried that the contractor building their new house wants to put in an XB16, which is considered a low grade AC. He was advised that while the XB16 is a lower end grade, it is better than most brands’ builder grade.
