Trane XB14 Central Air Conditioners

Trane XB14 Air Conditioner Overview

The XB14 has been discontinued. Categorized by Trane as a high efficiency unit, the XB14 air conditioner operates quietly as it works to lower homeowners’ cooling costs. With a SEER of up to 16.5, it qualifies as an Energy Star product when it is installed as part of a quality HVAC system.

The XB14 boasts many characteristics that contribute to its low operating costs and durability. The single-stage, quietly operating scroll compressor is surrounded by a galvanized steel cabinet. The cabinet consists of full-side louvered doors with a baked-on powder paint and Weatherguard fasteners that are resistant to rusting. The DuraTuff base pan also is designed to resist corrosion. Heat exchange is maximized thanks to the aluminum Spine Fin outdoor coil. This coil also creates low air resistance, which further enhances the unit’s efficiency.

Accessories available for the XB14 include the Trane humidifier, air cleaner and ventilator, to name a few.

"Lots of maintenance on my Trane Air Conditioner"

2.0 rating
Somewhat Unsatisfied

I have owned my Trane XB14 air conditioner for approximately ten years. Although it does a fine job of keeping the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter, I have had to have an air conditioner repairman come and work on it three times in the past ten years. I do not really know if that is a lot of times or not for ten years, but I would like to have to call less often; typically it takes a few days of either freezing or sweltering to get someone to the house, and then it is expensive to get the repairs themselves done. Overall I am happy with the air conditioner, I just wish it broke down less often. I would probably not exclude this brand from shopping for a future air conditioner, but I wouldn't specifically shop for it either. Likewise, I wouldn't tell a friend that buying a Trane is a mistake, but at the same time I probably wouldn't recommend it either.

"XB14 Air Conditioner – Quiet, Efficient, and Safe"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

The Trane air conditioner we have at our home was installed when we first purchased the house 4 years ago. I am completely satisfied with the function and operation of the unit. I have never had to do any type of maintenance on the unit and never have had to have it repaired. I turn it on before it starts to get hot, usually in April just to make sure all is well with the unit and each time there has been no problems. It works wonderful for our size of house and cools it quite efficiently. It is located outside of the master bathroom, and although I can hear it when it is running, it is definitely not loud enough to become annoying. The unit is easily cleaned by just hosing it down from water with a garden hose. I don't worry about any safety issues with the unit since the fan blades are fully enclosed within a protective barrier to keep hands out. I would fully recommend this unit to my friends and family.

"Upgrading an ineffencient Air Conditioner"

4.0 rating
Somewhat Satisfied

I have had my Trane air conditioner for about a year. I purchased it in early April of 2010 after my central air unit that was about 10 years old finally died. I live in a two story home that is approximately 2,500 square feet. The unit does a good job of keeping the living area downstairs nice and cool. It is consistent at keeping the temperature at the preselected degree. The one big sticking point with this system is that it doesn't seem to cool the upstairs as evenly. Although it does cool down the bedrooms there is definitely a distinct difference in the quality of the cooled air. As a result I have to use the ceiling fans in the bedroom and on particularly humid days I even have broken out an additional fan for added comfort. In hindsight a larger air conditioning unit would probably be more efficient for my two story home, however financially this was not an option. I have not had to do any repairs to the system since it really only had one season of use. I would definitely give this brand a try again since it has a reputation for being a quality unit and is energy efficient, however I think I'd do more research to find the proper unit to meet the needs of my home.

Other XB14 Reviews

The Trane XB14 is generally a well-regarded unit in the HVAC community. When a homeowner asks contractors on hvac-talk.com for a suggestion as to which Trane unit to have installed, these techs point out that the XB14 is quiet, as the manufacturer claims, but is far from being the quietest available unit.

There are a number of discussions online about this unit’s similarity to other Trane products. For example, in another post on the hvac-talk.com discussion board, a homeowner is advised to stick with a XB13, as contractors agree that such a slight upgrade to the XB14 likely won’t be worth the cost of the new unit. Others compare the unit to the XR15, which offers a few additional features over the XB14.

XB14 Warranty

Trane provides a 10-year warranty on the XB14’s compressor, outdoor coil and internal functioning parts. The product must be registered within 60 days of installation in order for the warranty to be activated. Failure to register the air conditioner in the 60 day period will result in the application of the base warranty.
