The Trane TCD is a discontinued self-contained rooftop central air conditioner designed for light commercial applications. It featured downflow discharge and intake, and select units used a 3-D scroll compressor. A frost protection control system was standard with all units, and select models had a crankcase heater. Single-side service, easy access panels, standardized component location and colored/numbered wiring helped provide easy serviceability. The unit’s heavy-gauge galvanized steel cabinet was water-tight for protection against the elements. The TCD used R22 refrigerant.
Mine is almost 40 years old now, and just this summer it finally failed. Very bad leak in the compressor line, and all the Freon leaked out.

Since it's most common for people to complain when taking the time to enter a review, I thought I would add some balance. We replaced a Carrier System that was less than 8 years old. The entire Carrier System was a nightmare. We've had the Trane System 4 years now. It's been perfect. The Installer has been fantastic (they did not install the original system). The number one problem with HVAC systems is the quality of the installation company and the service they provide. The installer noted almost a dozen mistakes with the installation of our original system that they said contributed to the issues we had. These issues included Return Air Duct not sufficient, electrical wiring issue with a/c compressor, a/c tonnage too low for house load, leaking drainage from a/c that was rusting the burner and causing issues with blower, thermastat was in bad place in house (too much direct air), etc… I know no brand is perfect. What you want to be sure is that you find a reputable installer who will back up their installation.

Junk! Don't buy Trane! We have had one five years and have trouble every summer. We replaced the condenser once and will have to do it again this summer. Junk!

Ignore the bad attitudes….maybe these feedback forums attrack people with a compliant and not the majority who are happy…..don't know. I've had TRANE systems for over 10 years so I feel I have a good perspective on the real story. I have 4 differenct A/C systems in my 25 rentals. TRANE is the best. Zero call backs on this equipement. The other brands have been a pain – leaking coolant, compressor, noise, leaking air/handlers, circuit board issues – you name it. The same company services all my equipment and they confirm that they have much fewer problems with the TRANE Equipment, better components and quality – American Made(not made in Mexico/Asia).

Other TCD Reviews
Among the very few online comments regarding the TCD, a member posted on hvac-talk.com that his TCD unit continues to blow fuses. After checking several possibilities, he and other members feel that the cause may be power surges in the building.
