Corporate History

State Water Heaters was founded in 1946 by Herbert Lindahl, Sr. as a small business manufacturing coal and wood-burning stoves in a garage in Nashville, Tennessee. The company began making electric water heaters in 1948, followed by gas-fired units in 1954. In 1957 the company began making porcelainized glass-lined tanks, on which the basic design feature of tanks manufactured today are based. In 1979 State added a commercial water heater, the Sandblaster, to its inventory.

State Water Heaters became the world’s largest producer of water heaters in 1996; production averaged ten thousand pieces per day. In 2001, State Industries was acquired by A.O. Smith.

Product Lines

State offers both electric and gas options, as well as tankless water heaters. The Premier line of water heaters includes the Hybrid Electric Heat Pump Water Heater, which is twice as efficient as a standard electric water heater and Energy Star rated, and a High Efficiency Gas Water Heater, which provides 0.70 EF and is Energy Star qualified. State features a line of both condensing and non-condensing gas tankless water heaters, all of which are Energy Star qualified.

In addition, the company offers the State Premier Solar Water Heater System, which includes a water tank, solar collectors, pump station and mounting hardware. State also offers storage tanks, pump tanks and expansion tanks to correspond with its heaters.

State Industries also markets the Reliance brand of water heaters to big box home improvement stores.

Residential electric water heaters carry tank and parts warranties that range from 6 years for Select models to 10 years for Premier series. Premier gas water heaters are warranted for 6 years for tank and parts. The On-Demand unit’s warranty covers replacement parts for 5 years and the heat exchanger for 12. Warranties are valid only for the original owner. The residential solar model has a 10-year solar collector, 6-year booster tank, 2-year pump station, and 1-year miscellaneous parts warranty.
