Sharp Manufacturer Overview

Sharp Electronics Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of the Japanese company Sharp Corporation, no longer offers room air conditioners. Sharp Electronics offers split-ductless air conditioners and portable air conditioners in areas outside of the United States, including Europe and India. Sharp Corporation reported net sales of $18.4 billion in 2017.

Corporate History

In 1912, Tokuji Hayakawa established the company that would later become Sharp. In 1935, it became incorporated as Hayakawa Metal Works Institute Co. The company was renamed the Sharp Corporation in 1970. In 1983, Sharp revolutionized room air conditioners by releasing one that used a temperature sensor in a remote control to adjust the temperature. Sharp also introduced the industry’s first air conditioner with humidifying and ventilating functions in 1996 and released air conditioners using Plasmacluster Ion technology to remove airborne mold fungi in 2001.

Product Lines

Sharp Electronics offers a line of multi-split inverter and single-split air conditioners which feature sound levels as low as 21 decibels. The company also produces a portable air conditioner which features a remote control and dehumidification feature.

Environmental Impact

Sharp manages product development, manufacturing and business operations in an environmentally conscious way. Sharp’s refrigerators, microwave ovens, air purifiers and air conditioners use Plasmacluster Ion technology, which recreates the natural process that purifies the air in the Earth’s atmosphere to remove dust, pollen, unpleasant odors and mold spores.

Sharp’s limited warranty is five years on the sealed cooling system, one year on all related parts and labor and in-home service.
