Heat pump overview

Heat pumps work by transferring heat from one area to another. In the winter, they extract heat from the outdoor air (even cold air holds heat) and transfer it inside to warm your home. During the summer, they transfer interior heat outside to cool your home. If you live in a mild climate, you’ll enjoy significant savings on your monthly energy bills by switching to a heat pump. Although heat pumps work in areas with more extreme weather, your monthly savings will not be as high.

There are two basic types of Ruud heat pumps: conventional and mini-split. A conventional heat pump is similar to an air conditioner but with an added reverse cycle. Some parts of the heat pump are housed in a cabinet inside your home, while others are contained in a weather-resistant cabinet outdoors. Air is forced throughout your house through a series of ducts.

A mini-split system is ideal if you don’t have existing ductwork. Mini-splits, available in single-zone and multiple-zone versions, are especially useful for home additions and other areas where it’s difficult or impractical to place new ducts.

When choosing a heat pump, be sure to pay attention to its energy-efficiency ratings: SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Season Performance Factor). These numbers are calculated by dividing the cooling or heating output, respectively, by the amount of electrical energy consumed by the heat pump. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient the heat pump.

You should also consider the heating capacity in watts or BTUs (British thermal units). One watt is 3.41 BTUs. You need approximately 10 watts, or 34.1 BTUs, to heat one square foot of space. To maximize efficiency, select a system that is properly sized for where it will be placed.

Care and maintenance

To maximize the energy efficiency and lifespan of your Ruud heat pump, be sure to keep it clean. Remove clutter, including vegetation, from around the outdoor unit, and clean it whenever it gets dirty. Wipe down the vents inside your home regularly, and occasionally turn off the fan to clean it. Change or wash the filters monthly, and schedule a maintenance appointment with a local service technician each year.

Ruud heat pump warranties

Ruud offers a variety of warranties depending on which heat pump you select. If you choose a mini-split system, for example, you’ll receive a 10-year conditional warranty on parts, including the compressor. Econet-enabled heat pumps offer a 10-year conditional unit replacement warranty. Ask your dealer to provide warranty information specific to your chosen unit. Standard warranties do not cover labor, but your dealer may offer extended warranties that include labor for an additional charge.
