"Can’t beat a Ruud!!!"

5.0 rating
Very Satisfied

Most of these reviews are bogus and self inflicted by poor installation!!! I installed a Ruud furnace in my house 22 years ago when I bought it, the first season I blew a board, I thought well it can happen so it was replaced under warranty. :] The second heating season same thing blew another board, crap, but it was covered under warranty. The repair man suggested I have my electric box checked because these boards just don’t fail like this. Sure enough my ground circuit was loose and 20 years later same board furnace is great. In those 22 years I replaced one hot surface box and 2 ignitors.

Had my furnace installed by a professional company and couldn’t be more pleased with it overall. Great system and cut my gas bill by 25%! I read all the negative reviews and disagree with most of them. If you don’t maintain them, they will give you problems, just like a car. Take 20 minutes to read the owners guide and you’ll get extended life out of most products you own. I will be replacing my a/c unit this spring with a RUUD product as well.

Achiever 90 Plus model good for the first couple years, then problematic. Latest issue, we needed a 2-foot rubber drain hose. So what’s the big deal?… You must get all parts from an authorized service provider due to “safety risks”. Sounds more like protecting service providers income to me – how about you? Anyway, 2-foot hose with service call would have been $100.00 +/- (we substituted with $3.50 hose from Lowes – hope ruud didn’t force us into a safety risk situation). Ruud/rheem won’t even give you the part number, or provide a parts list!!!! Whatever unit you buy, make sure parts are available over the counter to the owner, or require installer provide a parts list and service manual as part of the installation contract.

"Poor Quality Product"

Had a new Ruud Achiever 90 Plus professionally installed with a new a/c unit in 2005. In the five years it’s been in my house I’ve had more than 12 failures when it’s 20 degrees or below. So far two circuit boards, 1 pressure switch and 1 ignitor have failed. Please do research when buying major appliances, I trusted the installer for quality products- big mistake.

"Rudd Achiever 90 Plus"

Installed a new Ruud Achiever 90 plus 75000btu 91% 12 years ago when house was built. The only issue was a burnt out blower motor that I replaced 2 years ago. The unit did not start on one instance but that was due to snow (heavy winds) clogging the outside intake pipe. Overall, I’m pleased with the furnace thus far and is considering replacing it with a higher efficiency (95%) model and to take advantage of rebate incentives.

Other Achiever 90 Plus Reviews revealed a post from an owner whose flame would die out immediately. Another homeowner wrote that he had corrected a similar problem by replacing a drainage tube, which had become obstructed.

Another Ruud Achiever 90 Plus furnace owner writes to the experts at about the blower running, but no heat coming out of the vents. The contractor was able to discern after some discussion that the problem was probably being caused by condensation in a drainage tube once again. The expert stated this was a problem he rarely saw in many years of working on furnaces.

A homeowner writes on about problems with the Achiever 90 Plus not staying lit. A solution is not reached on the forum, but some responders feel the LP gas tank may need to be filled to increase the pressure.

A recent post on also mentions the issue of the burner going out. The consumer reports that the venting outside was at an incorrect angle and wind was entering the system and causing the problem.

Question and Answer

What does a green flashing light mean?

This flashing light is indicating an error code based on the number of flashes. In your owner’s manual or on the inside of the cover panel or perhaps on the furnace itself there should be a description of how to read the code and what each code means.

The furnace wouldn’t kick on last night. The ok light flashes twice. It doesn’t try to purge or ignite. Fan works.

Many times the air filter can be clogged and prevent airflow. If after replacing your filter your furnace continues to have issues you should hire a licensed contractor to look at the unit.

Where is the pressure switch for the Ruud Achiever 90 Plus located?

Blinking green light, alarm states the pressure switch is open and to check it.

See page 2 of the manual for the location for the pressure switch on your Ruud Achiever 90 Plus. There is a picture which shows it in the middle of the unit.

Where is the limit switch on the Achiever 90 Plus?

Owned 15 yrs but hardly used because we burned wood only backup and absence times. we started it this fall and began this. turn thermostat up and fan wants to start before it ignites. cleaned board and ckd what could. no service manual given when installed. think it may be limit switch.

Page two of the user manual identifies all the major interior parts. When it comes to working on a furnace I strongly recommend hiring a licensed contractor (due to the potential harm you can cause). Licensed contractors spend years in school and doing on the job training. So if you’re unsure of your abilities, contacting a contractor is always a safe bet!
