The discontinued Ruud UAMB air conditioner series, also known as the Achiever 12 series, consists of seven models with SEER ratings reaching up to 14.3. These condensing units are intended for use in single family, multifamily and light commercial locations.
The design of the UAMB series emphasizes durability and longevity, according to the manufacturer. The louvered wraparound jacket protects the coils, and the unit’s powder painted exterior is manufactured to withstand the elements year-round. The removable top grille is reinforced with steel and shaped to allow for a quiet upward discharge of air. By connecting the motor to the underside of the discharge grill, the single-speed motor is secured and the parts are protected from the elements. Additional corrosion resistance is provided by the painted base pan. The JAZ/CAZ models have low and high pressure controls and a liquid line filter drier that the JBZ/CBZ models lack.
Not only is the Copeland scroll compressor externally mounted and insulated, but it is equipped with a high temperature overload protection and low start torque for reliable starting. All Achiever models use copper tube-aluminum fin coils.
We purchased our home about two years ago. It has 2 units with the uamb- 036j for the second story. Don't know the install tear for sure but unit manufacture date is November 2003. It runs very quietly and cools great. And we are in Central Oklahoma with long hot summers. I had it thoroughly checked and everything passed the test. Would be thrilled if every compressor unit I buy lasts that long.
"Piece of crap!"
Unit was installed in 2011 and has been nothing but trouble since. The unit is used only occasionally in second home. Every trip to Florida means another call to the air conditioning repair shop. Every repair shop visit means hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in repair bills. I can say that, in all honesty, I have never owned anything that was so unreliable. I would never recommend this company's products to anyone.

"Ruud AC Units Didn't Last"
I had 2 units put in my home back in 2003. In 2011 I had to have the outside coil replaced on one. In 2012 I had to have the inside coil replaced on the same one. Now my upstairs AC unit is going bad. The inside coil is leaking gas and froze up. I have to replace it now. Next time I will pay a little more and get a better unit.
Other UAMB Reviews
Other online HVAC discussion boards contain many questions regarding the UAMB series and these units’ varied issues. As this is an older series, the problems seem to be age related. Among other issues, one homeowner writes in on justanswer.com for help with a fan that won’t stay on for more than 10 minutes before turning off and needing to be reset. Online experts suggest cleaning the coil, but when that does not fix the problem the homeowner calls in a tech to gauge whether or not the unit has a bad pressure switch.
In another instance, a homeowner posting on en.allexperts.com struggles when his unit’s scroll compressor fail after the thermostat is switched on to air conditioning. Having cleaned the outdoor coil, the unit still shuts off. After running through possible causes, an online technician suggests the unit’s fan motor has failed.
