The Rheem 13PJL is a heat pump currently produced by Rheem, with a SEER of 13 and an HSPF rating of 8.2; the 13PJL can achieve a SEER of 14 under optimal circumstances. The 13PJL heat pump is part of the Value Series manufactured by Rheem. This unit uses R-410A refrigerant, which is considered environmentally safe. According to the manufacturer, the design of the Rheem 13PJL keeps the motor and fan functioning quietly and efficiently. Air is discharged through the top grille, which creates quieter operation and less damage to shrubbery than a side-venting design.
Purchased unit May 2014 have had nothing but Big time trouble. First year was good then started having to put Freon at least twice a year. Now I need to replace inside coil should still be under warranty. Will never purchase a Rheem again and will not recommend them. They use thinner copper just to save money.
"Damaged Rheem Heat Pump"
I purchased a new home in November 2013. Rheem Heat Pumps were installed by Crown Homes, the builder. Had problems with them. Recently had to have the txv valve replaced and the transformer. When the service technician opened up the unit, it was damaged inside as if it had been dropped before installation. Rheem covered the TXV value part, but no warranty on the labor. It has cost me over $1,000 in repairs and just as much in electric bills. This was not my choice but the builders and there's no way for me to recover my money. Eventually, I'll be financially burdened with replacing both my units. I will report to the Consumer Protection Agency and hope others will do the same.
"Junk, Junk and Junk"
A two years old unit with not enough heat in winter, and not enough cool in summer. It has been nothing but wasting time and money making phone calls for techs to come and work on it. No tech from ars has been able to figure it out yet how to fix this garbage. Stay away from Home depot/ ars as well for supporting and selling, and servicing this junks.
"Heat pump problems"
My heat pump had freon leaks 2 weeks after being installed bad seniors and the coil Went twice less than 6 months these systems have major problems. I have contacted the bbb And next will be the consumer protection office. When you have 15 problems in 2 years this Is a lemon
"Quality of exterior unit 13PJL42"
Unit has a leak in the coil by a valve. Ars has soldered it 3 times (every 3 to 4 weeks). Rheem has had a problem with this unit with leaks in the coil and couldn’t care less. The unit 2 years old. It is really unbelievable that a Rheem unit cannot run for more than two years. This unit is unable to be replaced with another 13 seer because since 2015 only 14 seer is allowed in South Carolina. ARS said there is not a compatible replacement, so they would have to replace both the handler and outside unit. How nice for $5000.00 plus. Too bad. Run fast from Rheem, they will not stand behind their products.
A homeowner poses a question on hvac-talk.com about deciding between installing a Rheem heat pump and a system that uses Trane components. The contractor that responds believes the systems to be fairly equal, but the Rheem heat pump has a higher heating capacity; therefore, he recommends the Rheem.
Gardenweb.com reveals a post from a consumer looking to replace his 15-year-old system before it stops working. He has received some estimates on Rheem heat pumps, and is asking for expert opinions. The contractors say that Rheem is a very reliable brand, and the estimates seem reasonable. As always, the installers recommend dealing with a reliable HVAC company.
Another post on the gardenweb.com forum details a question from a homeowner regarding a Rheem heat pump versus a Westinghouse heat pump. The contractors say that both are equal, but seem to lean toward the Rheem, due to heating capacity. They do mention that the Westinghouse unit may operate more quietly, which is a concern for the questioner.
