Philco Brand Overview

Philco Manufacturer Overview

Philco is a manufacturer of heating and air conditioning systems, including air conditioners, heat pumps and gas furnaces. The company is a subsidiary of the Electrolux Group, although the brand is licensed to other manufacturers as well. Electrolux is headquartered in Sweden and had net sales of $13.5 billion in 2017.

Corporate History

Philco was founded in 1892 as the Helios Electric Co. of Philadelphia. It focused primarily on electricity and batteries and, as a result, later changed its name to Philadelphia Storage Battery Co., officially abbreviated in 1940 to “Philco.” By the 1930s, the company became a major player in the radio market, and then went on to produce televisions. In fact, Philco briefly employed Philo Farnsworth, inventor of the first all-electric television.

Philco was acquired by Ford Motor Co. in 1961 and by White Consolidated Industries in 1977, which in turn was acquired by Electrolux in 1986.

The Philco brand name is licensed worldwide to other manufacturers, including Nordyne, which produces furnaces and air conditioners under the Philco name.

Product Lines

Through Electrolux, Philco manufactures high-wall split room air conditioners. However, Nordyne manufactures a wide variety of air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps that are then sold under the licensed Philco name through Philco HVAC. The brand’s gas furnaces ranges from 80% to 95.1% AFUE, with both single- and 2-stage options available. Air conditioners range from 14 to 16 SEER. Higher-end models can be two-stage and variable speed.

Philco promotes the fact that its systems are fully tested at the factory and all come with a steel casing to protect the components.

Philco HVAC advertises air handlers, electronic air cleaners, thermostats and other accessories. Philco (through Electrolux) also makes appliances such as microwaves, freezers and refrigerators.

Environmental Impact

Electrolux puts the environment on its global agenda, saying it seeks to reduce energy consumption in response to global climate change. The company’s environmental policy shares its commitment to design products to lighten their long-term impact on the environment. Electrolux uses an environmental performance assessment tool to watch how its policy is enacted at its facilities.

All Philco HVAC products come with a 10-year Limited All-Parts Warranty when registered online or by phone within 60 days of installation. Some devices, including furnaces, have 1-year quality pledges; during this window, the manufacturer will replace the whole device.
