The Payne PA13 is a discontinued air conditioner with a cooling efficiency of up to 13 SEER. The unit had a single-stage compressor which was protected by internal pressure relief valves and a terminal plug. The steel cabinet featured a galvanized coating and a zinc phosphate finish which resisted corrosion. It had a capacity of 1 ½ to 5 tons and used R-22 refrigerant. Payne’s current 13 SEER air conditioning unit is the PA13NA.
This unit worked for a week then stopped. We then have to pay the company to run wires on the outside of the house. Worked for a month then stopped again. Now it's leaking somewhere.
Replace the whole unit on 4/06/2009 and it stopped cooling in September 2012. Was told I needed a new outdoor condensor coil which has a 10 year warranty. However, it cost me $650 in labor to replace the coil. When I inquired as to why the life on the coil was only 3 and half years I was told because of the cheap China aluminum being used in the manufacture of this brand. What a PAIN,shame on Payne. Buyer beware, find yourself another brand!

Consumers on two posts on hvac-talk.com asked for advice about which is the better unit between the PA13 and comparable units from Carrier, Goodman and American standard. One reply stated that because Payne is a Carrier product, there is almost no difference between them. Other answers stated that all are good, reliable units, with a couple of professional members saying they would go with Payne / Carrier.
Product registration is required for maximum warranty coverage. The warranty for the Payne PA13 air conditioner is comprised of the following:
