The Payne PA12 air conditioner is a discontinued model once manufactured by Payne. Payne is owned by Carrier, which is a subsidiary of United Technologies. The model is still available through various HVAC distributors, and is often used in new construction as a builder’s choice.
The PA 12 has a SEER value of 12, and operates with R22 refrigerant, also known as Freon.
Units are available in a range of sizes varying from 1.5 to 5 tons. The design of the PA12 air conditioner allows for easy access for maintenance and service personnel.
Awful unit. Local dealer undersized unit and it took forever to cool. Problem when you buy a new house is builder will always use cheapest stuff. Replaced with a bigger unit(Rudd) and cools house in minutes. Had service agreement with Albany Air and everytime they came out would find a problem and charge several hundred dollars. I should have called dateline to come see what they do.

"Payne a/c has been nothing"

Payne a/c has been nothing but a loss since it was installed. Wish I had took the $2,500 I spent for it and got a new toy. I had to replace it after 1 year and $800.00 more to repair it in labor and freon. I just got tired of the cost of the junk and put in a Good Carrier and have had no issues since……

I've had this ac unit for 6 years and it has worked and is working as it should, very good. Reading other reviews of the ac they mostly sound that this is a far inferior unit. However, how many Payne ac units have been installed, probably many. How many negatives a very small percentage. I'm not interested in recommending any products because we all have different experiences. I would suggest to anyone I've had my Payne PA12NA024-G for 6 years and it works great.

Unit was installed 8/13/2007. In 2008 unit had holes in coil–repaired– following year same problem, third year, we demanded coil be replaced– we paid the service work, yesterday got home after being gone for weekend– unit not working (temperature outside 109–inside 90). Called Carrier Corporate this morning after very little rest last night because of the heat and just like before, they do not give any satisfaction. This unit is a pile of junk, has been since day one. Purchased through home owners insurance– NEVER buy that either. We need to get that brand off the market. I'm looking into all avenues of consumer protection–let's band together and make them take it off the market–and provide those of us who have been harmed with restitution.
A post on city-data.com refers to the fact that Payne is a subsidiary of Carrier. The writer
mentions that the two brands have the same inside components, and that Payne is the “generic” version of a Carrier. A contractor that posts on hvac-talk.com states that Payne is Carrier’s cheap line, and that he would not recommend their products.
A homeowner asks a question on doityourself.com about his Payne air conditioner making
a “buzzing” noise. The experts say to look under the cover outside to find the source of the noise, but it is probably an easy fix. The homeowner reports that there are no other problems with the operation of the air conditioner. Searches of various forums did not reveal many problems with Payne air conditioners.
