The Maytag PSJ4BD is a discontinued high efficiency heat pump with an efficiency rating of up to 14 SEER and 8.5 HSPF. It was equipped with a permanently lubricated motor for low maintenance and quiet operation. A one-piece top/orifice and louvered condenser guard protected the unit while reducing noise levels, and a removable top grille assembly allowed easy access for servicing. High and low pressure switches protected against high system pressures and loss of refrigerant charge. A composite base pan absorbed sound while resisting corrosion.
My Maytag heat pump with remote outdoor unit is a lemon. Strand Heating and Air conditioning went out of business. We have a heat pump with heat exchanger inside that is leaking in a closet. The unit froze up two weeks ago. Last fall Freon was removed because the unit would not stop running and power bills were high. Last week we paid $240 to put Freon back in. Today the service man said the unit does not drain properly with the filter wet and closet floor wet. He could not fix it.The unit is less than a year old. I have no answer for help after being on the phone with Maytag and 5 others.

Purchased a 4 ton Maytag HVAC system in 2008 with a 12-year parts/labor warranty. We depended on the trusted name….wrong! We have had to have parts replaced every year! Now Maytag does not want to honor the warranty. Where is the Better Business Bureau? Do not buy a Maytag!

"Best decision I ever made (for A/C)."

I've had my Maytag heat pump (1200 Series, 4 Ton 16 SEER) for just over a year now in Phoenix, AZ. I've had no problems, and it works great! I think the level of skill for the installation has a lot to do with the reliability of the unit. My guy did a great job and is highly reputable. I would do it all over again with a Maytag if I had to replace one for a new house. Before I had this project (to replace a 22-year-old Goodman), I'd never heard of Maytag for A/C (heat pumps). My installer says there are no more problems with Maytag than with Rheem or Trane, and he installs all 3. We love it! I highly recommend annual service and upkeep.

2 1/2 years after installation, my electric bill shot up 40%. I had the dealer come out and he said "Yep, there's a problem". Something about fluid in the lines that gets gummed up and causes the unit to quit.

Do not buy a "Maytag" type of heat pump. Have had 4 compressor replacements. Maytag will not honor 10 year warranty. Have currently filed a complaint with North Carolina Attorney generals office. They are junk.
