Lennox GCS16 Air Conditioner Overview

Lennox’s discontinued GCS16 air conditioner, first introduced in 1989, is a combination packaged gas heat/dx cool unit for residential and light commercial use. It is available in sizes ranging from 2 to 5 tons for residential applications or 6 to 25 tons for commercial use. The unit can be installed on rooftops or on the side of buildings, with discharge air directed from beneath or horizontally. The GCS16 has an AFUE of up to 80 percent and a SEER of up to 12.70. The unit uses R-22 refrigerant.

Lennox manufactures cabinets from heavy gauge galvanized steel and coats them with an electrostatically bonded powder enamel paint. The internal components are accessed via removable cabinet panels. The control box’s placement and removable aluminized steel burners were designed to be serviced easily.

The GCS16’s heat exchanger is made with aluminized steel, providing resistance to corrosion and rusting. The curved, rounded shape of the heating surface was designed for improved heat transfer, and direct spark ignition improves efficiency by sparking intermittently.

The Lennox GCS16 is equipped with fan guards made with corrosion-resistant PVC coated steel wire. GCS16 models have either one or two fans, and each unit’s motor is permanently lubricated and protected from overload.

Both the residential and commercial models of the GCS16 can accept various thermostat control systems. Several accessories are available, including the economizer, warm-up kit and Honeywell control products. The cabinet has a low voltage terminal strip enabling field wiring.

Lennox GCS16 Air Conditioner Reviews

"Never Again!"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

The unit was new when I had my house built in 2007. Compressor is locked up and full of R22. Of course, I called should have been under warranty right no my unit was built 2004 and sat on the shelf till my home builder purchased it and install. But Lennox says warranty starts on the date of unit manufacture not when consumer purchased it! I had my unit gutted and switched to 410. I'm out of pocket $3,600.00 in my subdivision the HVAC repair trucks are here more than the residents. They are dying at the same time. 2 neighbors next to me locked up compressors and massive coolant leaks, all are switching to 410. R22 is too expensive and getting hard to find!

"Piece of Junk!"

1.0 rating
Very Unsatisfied

We replaced our a/c unit 3 years ago and it's been a nightmare ever since! The sales rep talked us into an Amana because of it's warranty, and it's a total nightmare. I have a stack of 30 receipts from fixes this unit has needed. The coil has been replaced, the capacitor, anything you can possibly think of. It's leaked from here, there, and everywhere. It's a piece of garbage that was a total waste of money. The 13 year old unit that we replaced was much better than this!

"You can blame the equipment or the guy who put it in."

Very Satisfied

Most homeowners who have a problem will blame the brand name not the cheap hack who put it in. If you have a cheap contractor install your equipment expect it to run poorly.

Other GCS16 Reviews

Online HVAC discussion boards encourage homeowners to have their Lennox air conditioners serviced annually and emphasize the importance of quality care and installation. Problematic trends reported for Lennox air conditioners involve coil leaks and faulty valves, and the fact that labor costs are not covered by warranties. Nonetheless, these units are considered to be extremely quiet and the brand remains competitive.
