Laars Mascot LX Boiler Overview

The Laars Mascot LX is a wall-hung combi gas boiler with an efficiency rating of 95% AFUE. It is an Energy Star Most Efficient 2016 product and is available in 7 sizes ranging from 50 MBH to 220 MBH. It has a stainless steel heat ASME exchanger and a stainless steel brazed plate direct hot water heat exchanger and uses advanced water flow technology. The unit can be used with natural or propane gas and features ultra-low NOx emissions. It has an auto-cascade setup for multiple boiler installations and can be direct vented up to 150 feet. The Mascot LX uses a Laars integrated control system which includes temperature control, diagnostics, outdoor reset capability and easy wiring access.

"Huge waste of money"

Our Laars Mascot LX was installed brand new 2 years ago. The selling point was that it was made right up to the street from us. If we needed parts there were plenty. Great… The first year it kept breaking down, the installer was at my house at least 6 times. On the last call to him, Kevin Gauthier – Rochester, NH we received an answering machine… "I have retired". Oh great… Laars can't sell parts to anyone but a dealer. I was so upset I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. A Tech from Laars came out to my house and resolved the issues. He replaced parts, updated the circuit board, etc.. I was happy again. (You can read my complaint on the BBB web site) I called around and found a company to service it. Next, the Domestic Hot Water sensor dies, replaced ….. cleaned January of this year. Then called them back because it was leaking. April 22, no hot water. April 23 Tech comes out and charges me for the diagnostic. I need a new sensor. Next day another tech arrives with the wrong part. Dubbed with it all afternoon and got it to install, but it needed a jumper wire that he had to go get. Finally, have hot water until he drives away. Call back and the On Call arrives, has no clue. But suddenly sees a spark shooting out of the igniter. Funny how we'd been turning this off and on for days and it never did that. Oh well… He leaves and says "Sorry", the tech will be here in the morning with Laars support. 04-26-19 I wait all day, no one calls, no one comes. I call them at 3:30 pm, the guy's ticked off because he has to come back. He calls tech support and between Tech Support, me holding the schematic they find out it's the wrong sensor. Oh, we have to order that part too. Meanwhile, he removes the Igniter and the porcelain is cracked. He puts it back in but now the furnace won't run. "I'll be back tomorrow"… No heat for the house, no heat for hot water. I would never ever recommend a Laars product. They won't even work on their own product.

Very Unsatisfied

I liked the boiler until a faulty sensor kept causing it to shut down. Things break, that's to be expected, but the problem is that it is very difficult to get parts for these. It takes at least 2 weeks. So, if you can go without heat for a few weeks, get a Laars. Otherwise, you might want to consider a different brand. The part is under warranty – pretty useless if you can't get it though.

My new boiler has already saved me $200 each month this summer. Even in the heat my old system ran constantly, since the install that is an $800 savings, and for the first time in 20 years I am not dreading the heating and hot water bill. My system was installed by a very professional and courteous Laars tech (Kevin). Thank you Laars and Kevin for a job well done, I would recommend you anytime.

  • 2-year limited parts and labor warranty
  • 15-year limited warranty on the primary heat exchanger. The warranty is prorated after the eighth year
