International Comfort Products Brand Overview

International Comfort Products Manufacturer Overview

International Comfort Products LLC (ICP) designs, manufactures and markets heating and cooling systems. The company sells air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps under a variety of trade names. In 1999, ICP was acquired by United Technologies Corp. (UTC) and folded into the UTC subsidiary Carrier Corp. In 2017, UTC had net sales of $59.8 billion in 2017.

Corporate History

ICP previously stood for Inter-City Products, although that version of ICP came out of the sale of Inter-City Gas Corp. in the 1980s. The company grew through a series of acquisitions in the 1980s and ’90s. Among them was ICP’s 1986 acquisition of Lewisburg, Tenn.-based Heil-Quaker Corp. (known today simply as Heil) from Whirlpool Corp.; ICP remains headquartered in Lewisburg today. ICP acquired KeepRite in 1981, Arco and Comfortmaker in 1991, and the now-defunct Clare Bros. in 1999.

Today its brands include Arcoaire, Comfortmaker, Day & Night, EcoTemp, Heil, KeepRite and Tempstar. It also sells industrial products through ICP Commercial. It reports that its network of distributors is among the largest in the country.

Product Lines

ICP produces a wide variety of products in a range of efficiencies that are then sold under its varied brand names. Air conditioners and heat pumps range from basic 13 SEER models to top of the line models. Gas and oil furnaces are available in a variety of sizes, with efficiencies up to 98% AFUE.

Many of the company’s products are compatible with its Observer communicating system, which relays information to the homeowner’s wall control. SoftSound is another shared feature; these units feature “premium components” and a “deluxe sound blanket,” as well as variable operation to lower unit noise. Each of these systems are promoted by the manufacturer for being reliable, durable and quiet.

ICP’s products feature a “No Hassle Replacement” limited warranty. If the compressor, heat exchanger or coil fails within a set period of time (this varies between 1 and 10 years, depending on the product), the original purchaser will receive a replacement unit. A 10-year parts limited warranty also is available, when online registration is completed within 90 days of installation. Without registration, this reverts to a 5-year warranty.
