The Hawken Energy HE is an outdoor wood furnace with a water capacity ranging from 150 to 368 gallons and a heating capacity ranging from 144,000 to 358,000 maximum BTU. The unit's water jacket completely encircles the structural steel firebox. It has a large wood loading door and an easy access back door, and the furnace is mounted on steel legs which eliminates the need for a concrete pad and helps keep rodents out. An automatic forced draft fan provides faster heat, and a stainless steel chimney cap keeps water out of the furnace while lowering heat loss. The powder coat metal exterior features enhanced green paint with black trim. The 2015 starting price of the HE furnace is $6,495 plus shipping and installation. Financing is available.
We bought a 409 stainless unit from Hawken because we have sulfur in the water which a water softener does not remove. The seams were welded with common rod instead of stainless steel rod and they cracked the first time the heat was removed. Hawken said the manufacturer was no longer standing behind the warranty but they did replace it with one they started making themselves. I told them about the sulfur and they said the 1/4 in mild steel would stand up to it with no problems. In December 2014, the bottom rusted out. It turns out their water treatment does nothing to stop the sulfur from eating the steel. When they found out the water treatment did nothing for sulfur, they told me that because the water had sulfur in it the warranty was void. In Ohio almost all ground water has sulfur in it that is not removed at the water treatment plants. In addition the unit had no damper so you always got smoke and fire in the face when you filled it. It also used more wood than the original unit. I regret not having the original unit repaired locally by a good welder cutting it open and redoing all the welds. I would not buy anything from these people again.
I am very pleased with my wood burner. It has been problem free for 4 years and seems to use less wood than my neighbors brand x burners. My only complaint is that the fan kick out breaker is located on the rear of the wood burner and a panel has to be removed to get to it and it's a little bit of a reach to locate it. All in all the Hawken wood burner does its job and if I was in the market for another one Hawken would be the first one I would look into.

"Awesome wood furnace!"
I love this stove. I like not having a wood stove in my house anymore, or climbing on the roof in the winter to clean the chimney. I also like not having the wood mess in my house anymore. I love the stove because it is well built and insulated. I actually get snow to accumulate on the roof of the stove. It eventually melts away, but only because the chimney camp shoots the smoke down towards the roof.

"Keeps me warm"
I buy all my firewood and still save thousands every year. The furnace runs flawlessly and has worked very well. My house is warm, my wife is happy, I'm happy. Thanks Hawken.
I really like the unit itself, I think it's a great investment. I do not like the fact that I have had to replace the high limit control sensor several times since I have had it.
Opinions regarding the HE are mixed, based on comments from online HVAC forums. There are posts on outdoorwoodfurnaceinfo.com from consumers pleased with their units, and there are also posts from homeowners who have many complaints.
