Heat pump overview

Heat pumps move air in and out of your home to cool the living space during summer and warm your home during winter. If you live in a temperate climate, a heat pump can help reduce your energy bills. Heat pumps can still be effective for homes in areas with more extreme weather; however, monthly savings will likely be less significant.

A conventional heat pump functions similarly to an air conditioner, with a reverse cycle. While a conventional heat pump requires a series of ducts, homeowners can install a mini-split system without needing to add ductwork. Available in single-zone and multi-zone options, mini-split systems require no ducts.

When choosing a heat pump, consider each model’s energy-efficiency ratings. A heat pump’s energy efficiency is represented by the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and the heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF). These numbers are calculated by dividing the cooling or heating output by the amount of electrical energy the heat pump consumes. Higher ratings indicate more energy-efficient heat pumps.

Another important consideration is the heat pump’s heating capacity in watts or British thermal units (BTUs). One watt equals 3.41 BTUs. It takes roughly 10 watts, or 34.1 BTUs, to heat one square foot of space. For maximum efficiency, select a system that is properly sized for the area you plan to heat.

Care and maintenance

A ductless mini-split heat pump is relatively easy to care for. Proper care and maintenance can extend the useful life of your system, while maximizing its safety and efficiency. Change or clean the filter every 30 to 60 days or when it becomes dirty. Ensure nothing restricts airflow from the indoor vents, and wipe them down regularly with a damp cloth. A few times per year, turn off the system and spray down the coil with a low-pressure garden hose. Have the system professionally serviced twice annually, before both the heating season and the cooling season.

Haier heat pump warranties

Haier’s standard warranty is one of the best in the industry for ductless mini-split heat pumps. The company offers a seven-year limited warranty on the compressor and a five-year limited warranty on all other parts. Some systems qualify for a 10-year limited warranty. Ask your dealer about the specific warranty for your chosen system.
