Goodman’s SSZ16 heat pump has a single compressor. It earns energy ratings of 16 SEER (for cooling) and 9.75 HSPF (for heating), as well as an Energy Star rating from the U.S. Department of Energy. It is a middle-of-the-road product from Goodman: medium efficiency, medium cost.
Cooling and heating capacity for this model ranges from 24,000 to 60,000 BTU/h. All versions are relatively quiet, with sound ratings between 70 and 72 dB. Goodman advertises this model as being particularly quiet due to a sound-control top.
The SSZ16 uses R-410A refrigerant (also known as Puron, a more ozone-friendly replacement for Freon).
The SSZ16 user manual provides comprehensive data about the heat pump’s performance at different temperatures, so you can see how the machine will function in your climate.
We bought this unit to save money and we have put in over $1000. Goodman company does not care if their product does not perform. We contacted them and after having us jump through hoops with information they refused to help us. We would never recommend this to anyone!
"Not too sure about Goodman"
2Nd year with this heat pump, paid a pretty penny for the most efficient unit. Winter warming seems to work fine, summer cooling does not cut it. Thermostat is set on 66 degrees just to keep the air below 80 in late afternoon. Never felt "cold" — comfortable, not cold. I like cold! Made calls to installer re: problem, suggested we clean out cottonwood crap from unit possibly clogged, and numerous other owner fixes. Now 2nd season into it I've called repair hoping to get freon. Ha! not the problem $100.00 service call later. Installer has been out, now its some valve problem go figure. All this time I've been giving Com-Ed a lot of money every month for a problem with the unit. The bummer is I knew something was wrong or Goodman sucked. Now looking back how high is my electric bill in winter and has it ever been working right? Contacting Goodman is no fun, not helpful at all and I do agree they do not stand behind their product regarding major repairs such as this. I feel like I have a lemon with a band-aid on it. So much for energy efficient and saving some $ with a good unit. Really not very happy I would definitely try another brand if this unit ever needs replacement. I would not buy Goodman again.
"Heat Pump Problems"
We had this heat pump installed in August 2007, we have had to have freon and repairs each summer. We just recently had the plugs replaced and received a bill for $500 for the labor and freon. I believe this is unfair and the company should back their product in full. I am going to request a new unit, and will not recommend this to anyone.

"Nothing but problems and even worse customer service"
Have a relatively new 4 ton 16 seer Goodman Model# ssz160481ab r410a unit installed in June 2009. The unit died at the end of Dec 2009 and the contractor, reseller (Barnett – Pro Contractor Supplies) and Goodman Mfg have been unable to resolve the issue. I will never do business with anyone who purchases from Barnett or Goodman Mfg.
I installed 3 Goodman heat pumps in the fall of 2007. This year the ssz160601 condensor turned into a giant ice cube. The ssz140421 has defrost issues that I cannot fix, the defrost switch and circuit board have been replace with no luck. The loss of charge switches were mis- engineered and had to be replace last year. Goodman 410a heats pumps are junk!!! Do not buy goodman 410a heat pumps, this stuff is trash!!! I repeat goodman heat pumps are trash!!!
Users on hvac-talk.com generally dont like Goodman or the SSZ16, preferring comparable products from Rheem, Trane and Amana. Several reviewers on the site remind buyers that the Goodman SSZ16 is basically the equivalent of the Amana Distinctions SSZ16 (Goodman owns Amana and most of their products are equivalent). However, others compare it favorably to other Goodman products, saying users would get more for their dollar, relative to a SSZ14a cheaper and less efficient model.
Reviews on gardenweb.com are mixed. Some folks don’t like the Goodman SSZ16, preferring Trane and other brands; others like Amana and point out that Amana and Goodman are now the same company.
An assessment of Goodman products on qualitysmith.com describes the SSZ16 as not quite as good a deal as the SSZ14, but still offering good efficiency for the cost.
