Goodman’s SSZ16 heat pump has a single compressor. It earns energy ratings of 16 SEER (for cooling) and 9.75 HSPF (for heating), as well as an Energy Star rating from the U.S. Department of Energy. It is a middle-of-the-road product from Goodman: medium efficiency, medium cost.
Cooling and heating capacity for this model ranges from 24,000 to 60,000 BTU/h. All versions are relatively quiet, with sound ratings between 70 and 72 dB. Goodman advertises this model as being particularly quiet due to a sound-control top.
The SSZ16 uses R-410A refrigerant (also known as Puron, a more ozone-friendly replacement for Freon).
The SSZ16 user manual provides comprehensive data about the heat pump’s performance at different temperatures, so you can see how the machine will function in your climate.
Purchased 2 units in 2007 . Installed by licensed contractor. Both units have been in constant operation both summer heat of Texas and mild winters. The ac months give me plenty of cooling with fairly low electric bills in comparison to my old units. I would say about 1/3 less electrical usage. Winter heat pump usage with heat strips are a little more expensive especially in temps lower than 15 degrees. Problems I have had is loss of evaporator coil due to leak after 5 years. Goodman replaced the coil, but the labor was on me ( 500.00 out of pocket ) . After install of coil the expansion valve for the evaporator coil failed and had to be replaced. ( 200.00 labor). Because I registered the units with Goodman at time of installation they honored their warranty. Not too bad for 10 years of constant operation. I have seen other brands such as Trane, York , Lennox in our neighborhood with a lot more problems then I have had with these Goodman units. So All and All I would have to say they are decent units with a lot of capacity and reasonable operation costs.

"Goodman A/C review"
I needed an A/C unit because the Rheem I had was having issues from the day I purchased this house. I had A/C companies price several units and I read 1000 reviews on all the various units, some good and some bad. I ran across one review that said since most A/C units or components are manufactured by three companies and assembled in various places by different brand name companies, a lot of bad reviews on the Goodmans are due to the units being installed incorrectly by non-licensed installers. This is due to the fact that it does not require a license to purchase, therefore a lot of the bad reviews the units are receiving from owners are due to being installed improperly. I have had my unit since April 2015; it's now mid-July. The unit is outstanding and is cooling my house better than I had figured it would. Right now my electric bill is around 50.00 dollars lower than last year. The way I feel now I would recommend this unit and I would purchase another one.
"Worst heat pump"
My heat pump is only 5 years old and I had trouble since the beginning. I've already replaced the outside compressor, coil, coil inside, and now it doesn't defrost and it shakes like hell. This is not Goodman; it should be called Goodshit. Worst heat pump I ever had.

Built our home in 2008… Have had to have our heat pump worked on every summer since! I have now been waiting 7 weeks to hear it is no longer under warranty and because of the leaking freon it has blown the compressor and will cost me $1800 to fix! Not to mention the weeks without air every single year. Always takes them 2-3 weeks to get it fixed. Sending the bad parts in before they'll send the new ones out!!.. The money we have paid every year, the frustration with repair and doing without air conditioning for multiple weeks in 90 degree temperatures… All the parts they have replaced… I'm done! My brother has had the same problems and theirs is only a year older than mine! Would never buy another product from them!
In 7 years: 4 compressors blown, 2 service valves failed, expansion valve failed, 4 other refrigerant leaks, evaporator coil replaced, electric bills 30-50% higher than with my old "inefficient" unit that worked but needed a repair when I was talked into this unit, never heats nor cools the way we want and think it should, though it runs & runs. To top it off, on one of the compressor replacements, Goodman rejected claim to cover a 3-month old compressor after Goodman customer service assured me it was covered (when I was considering replacing the whole unit with another brand) and I even had a screen shot of my online account showing coverage.
Users on hvac-talk.com generally dont like Goodman or the SSZ16, preferring comparable products from Rheem, Trane and Amana. Several reviewers on the site remind buyers that the Goodman SSZ16 is basically the equivalent of the Amana Distinctions SSZ16 (Goodman owns Amana and most of their products are equivalent). However, others compare it favorably to other Goodman products, saying users would get more for their dollar, relative to a SSZ14a cheaper and less efficient model.
Reviews on gardenweb.com are mixed. Some folks don’t like the Goodman SSZ16, preferring Trane and other brands; others like Amana and point out that Amana and Goodman are now the same company.
An assessment of Goodman products on qualitysmith.com describes the SSZ16 as not quite as good a deal as the SSZ14, but still offering good efficiency for the cost.
