Heat pump overview

A heat pump can improve the comfort of your home by heating and cooling air. Heat pumps also circulate, clean and dehumidify indoor air. Goodman heat pumps feature technology such as ComfortBridge, which continuously monitors heat pump performance to optimize indoor comfort. Some Goodman units feature scroll compressors, which have fewer moving parts than traditional reciprocating compressors. Scroll compressors are more reliable and can reduce long-term maintenance and repair costs.

Goodman heat pumps include factory-installed filter dryers that absorb system moisture and filter out contaminants. Goodman’s high-capacity discharge mufflers reduce high-frequency vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted through the tubing and into the home. The factory-installed suction line accumulator protects the compressor from sudden surges of oil and liquid refrigerant from the suction line.

Goodman manufactures heat pumps of various efficiency levels. The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating denotes the model’s cooling efficiency, with higher SEER ratings indicating more efficient heat pumps. To be included on Energy Star’s list of the most efficient models, a heat pump must have a rating of at least 18. Goodman’s flagship GSZC18 heat pump meets this requirement. The heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) indicates a heat pump’s efficiency while in heating mode. The HSPF rating measures watt-hours of electricity used to produce the heat output in British thermal units (BTUs). The Department of Energy requires heat pumps to have efficiency ratings of at least 14 SEER and 8.2 HSPF.

The unit uses ComfortBridge technology to optimize indoor comfort, and SmartShift delivers short-cycle protection. The heat pump also features a factory-installed bi-flow liquid-line filter dryer and a factory-installed suction line accumulator. The GSZC16 is available in sizes ranging from two to five tons, and heating and cooling capacities range from 24,000 to 60,000 BTU. A two-ton GSZC16 Goodman heat pump costs $2,040.


The energy-efficient GSZ16 heat pump has ratings of 16 SEER and 9.5 HSPF. The system features a high-efficiency scroll compressor and SmartShift technology. The bi-flow liquid-line filter dryer and the compressor crankcase heater are both factory installed. The GSZ16 is energy efficient, quiet and affordable. The GSZ14 heat pump features efficiency ratings of 15 SEER and 9 HSPF. The unit includes short-cycle protection that ensures quiet and reliable defrosting. The unit features an energy-efficient compressor and a single-speed PSC condenser fan motor. This affordable heat pump can offer years of reliable heating and cooling. The GSZC16 is available in sizes ranging from 1.5 to five tons. Available heating and cooling capacities range from 18,000 to 60,000 BTU. A two-ton GSZ14 Goodman heat pump costs $1,969. 

Goodman heat pump installation pricing

Several factors impact the best heat pump size for each home, including the size of the living space, the home’s layout and the quality of existing ductwork. Goodman heat pumps are available in capacities ranging from 1.5 to five tons.

Contact a local heating and air conditioning contractor for a Goodman heat pump recommendation and an accurate quote. With favorable site conditions, installation of a new heat pump typically takes about 15 hours. Labor costs vary; however, Homewyse estimates the total cost of labor for heat pump installation to be $1,297 to $1,572.

Installation of a new heat pump requires the following steps.

  • Install and connect a dedicated 240V 20A circuit.
  • Install and level the mounting pad.
  • Fasten the condenser to the pad.
  • Install the heat exchanger.
  • Install the lines between the heat exchanger and condenser.
  • Connect the heat pump to the thermostat.
  • Charge the condenser with R-410A refrigerant.
  • Test the entire system.

Supplies may cost an additional $250 to $300. Unfavorable site conditions can also increase installation costs. The addition of new ductwork and the removal of existing equipment can also increase the total cost of installation.

Goodman heat pump maintenance

Properly maintaining your Goodman heat pump will maximize its service life. Keep all sides of the unit free of snow, ice and debris to ensure proper airflow. Prune shrubs so branches are at least 1.5 feet from the unit. Check air filters on a monthly basis, and clean or replace filters when needed. Keep the outdoor coils clean. When necessary, turn off the unit and hose down the coils using a heavy-duty degreaser. Before using the air conditioning in the spring, flush the indoor condensate pan. An annual inspection by a trained HVAC technician can extend the life of your unit and may be required to maintain your warranty.

Goodman heat pump warranties

All Goodman heat pumps include a 10-year limited parts warranty, which covers all functional parts. Under the provisions of this warranty, Goodman agrees to replace parts found to be defective under normal use and maintenance.

All of the above Goodman heat pumps, with the exception of the lower-tier GSZ14, also come with a lifetime limited warranty. Should the compressor ever fail, Goodman will provide a new one. The lifetime limited warranty includes two provisions. First, the claimant must be the original purchaser. Second, the purchaser must live in the single-family residence in which the unit was originally installed. Goodman warranties are in force only if the heat pump was installed by an HVAC professional who followed all applicable codes and regulations.
