The Goodman GMEC96 is a two-stage, multi-speed gas furnace. It has an efficiency rating of up to 96% AFUE and has earned the Energy Star label. The unit is designed for multi-position installation and is certified for direct vent or non-direct vent, with easy access top venting and optional side venting. It has an aluminized steel tubular heat exchanger and a stainless steel secondary heat exchanger. A self-diagnostic control board with constant memory fault code output to a LED helps monitor furnace operation.
I just had this furnace installed on April 22, 2019. I can tell you it is super quiet. I actually have to put my hand over the vent the see if it is running. Seems to be a very efficient furnace so far. I have read mixed remarks, although I’m one to believe that we must give it a chance. The warranty is great, providing Goodman stands by their commitment. The overall size is nice, not too big and not too small. I love the two-stage format. I have noticed it uses much less gas when operating on the single stage, and kicks in two the second stage when the heat is required the adjust quicker. Overall I think I have made the right choice going with a 2 stage Goodman furnace.
This was installed in November 2015 and has been nothing but trouble ever since. I live in Wisconsin, where a reliable furnace is a must. The burners rust and had to be replaced twice. Now it will not start – which has been a problem before. I would not recommend this furnace to anyone.
"Worst furnace ever… poorest quality"
Our furnace has needed 6 repairs in the last 12 years and on the 13th year it finally needs replacement due to a cracked heat exchanger. Goodman should be ashamed of their quality to the end consumer and placing such hardship on people for such a necessary need of heating homes.
"Goodman GMEC96 Furnace"
Installed this unit spring of 2015, so only on its 2nd winter. No issues or Problems with it. Great furnace with 10 year warranty. 96% efficient and ecm motor for continuous air circulation and even heating and cooling. It replaced a Bryant 90 plus with bad heat exchanger. I researched many brands and talked with several hvac service people. The only thing you need to keep an eye on with all high efficiency furnaces are are the filters, intake and exhaust, lack of air flow can cause them to shut down temporarily. Parts are readily available and easy to obtain. It is American made and they fixed the issues that are discussed on the internet from years ago.

"Great, efficiant, dependable furnace for a single family home"
We decided to install this furnace in our home when we bought the home. The home had an older heat pump set up when we first bought the home, and the previous owners had reported that their electric bill was upwards of $500.00 in the winter. As the home was already using gas for cooking, we decided to go ahead and install the furnace because, in our experience, gas furnaces have been more efficient. I’m very glad that we did, and that we sprung for an energy efficient model. We have only been using the furnace for two winters, but it has likely already paid for itself in energy savings. We have had absolutely no issues with our unit, and I recommend Goodman products in general, and this model in particular, to anyone that I know who expresses that they are considering buying a furnace. The unit also comes with a ten year warranty in case anything does happen to go wrong. Should the time come when we have to utilize the warranty, I’ll follow up with another review regarding that.
A consumer on hvac-talk.com asked about the reliability of the GMEC96 and was told that the Goodman is a good unit, as long as it is installed correctly. There were a couple of problems with control boards mentioned in the thread.
