The Goodman SSX16 is a high-efficiency, split system air conditioner with an efficiency rating of up to 16 SEER. The unit features a two-stage Copeland scroll compressor and a compressor sound blanket to reduce noise levels. A three-bladed fan and louvered sound-control top also help reduce sound levels. The condenser coil of the SSX16 is made of corrugated aluminum fins and rifled refrigeration-grade copper tubing. The louvered, heavy gauge galvanized steel cabinet protects the coil and is coated with a corrosion- and rust-resistant finish. The SSX16 uses the environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant.
Our Goodman system is 5 years old and we're on our second coil replacement. But parts are not in stock so I am sitting in a 90-degree house waiting for a part to be trucked in from Houston to South Florida. I offered to pay for overnight service quoted at $400. The next day overnight shipping jumped to $1,200. They had no intention of ever shipping overnight or 2 day air. I will never buy this system again. I wish their Executives would come work out of my house. I am looking at two to three weeks of 90 degree indoor heat in South Florida in August. This is reprehensible customer service.

"Coil failure and valve failure"

Coil had to be changed twice within one year. Second unit already requires a new regulating valve. Both units were installed in 2009 and have been used sparingly. The longest use was for one month in summer and one month in winter. Total use in the past 6 years is less than 10 months. Past repairs have already cost more than $2000.

I bought the 16 SEER AC/heat pump in 2010 for $6000 installed from a very reputable AC contractor here in Florida. The air handler coil developed a leak in less than two years. The contractor had to order a new one under warranty, which took 10 days. Although the coil was under warranty, the labor cost me $500. Now again, the new coil developed a leak and the serviceman told me they would have to order a new one which will be 5-10 days. It would cost another $450 +. My original Carrier last me 20 years without a major expense. My neighbors Carrier is still humming after 25 years. So in retrospect, I think I should have stayed away from Goodman as $500 expense every two years is beyond my budget!

We own rental property in the East Texas area. Out of several properties, one being apartments (80 units) located in Longview, Texas, we have replaced all our units. We upgraded to 16 SEER to help the tenants with energy costs. Going on our 5th year with only minor maintenance and few electrical failures, we are very pleased with our investment. With our other properties, Reem/ Heil/ Trane have been a money pit. Goodman has the best warranty in the HVAC industry. I think the biggest problem I see is the tech and installer. You get what you pay for. We use only a qualified Authorized Goodman Contractor. This is all they deal with and they know the product. I hope this information helps in making your choice. We are glad we did. Carl Egean Edwards Dallas Texas GMAC Property Management Inc.

"Installation is everything"

I am a contractor in South Florida. Any compressor that fails in the first few years was not properly installed! Any brand will fail without a proper vacuum or line set flush. I've been doing this over 20 yrs and have zero compressor fails. We install about 8-10 systems a month. Mainly Goodman or Ruud. Customer should call a local distributor and ask them to refer a contractor. They know who brings in all the warranty parts and who doesn't .
The few online reviews of the SSX16 seem divided. A consumer on gardenweb.com states that the SSX16 is not worth the investment, especially when used with certain furnaces. Another consumer said he is impressed with the warranty and price of the unit. A reviewer on doityourself.com had trouble with the compressor being loud and starting often, and said he’d heard of other consumers having the same problem.
SSX16 Warranty
Online product registration is required within 60 days of installation for maximum warranty coverage. The Goodman SSX16 is covered by a 10-year limited compressor warranty and a 10-year limited parts warranty.
