Ranging in size from 1.5- to 5-ton capacity units, the Gibson JT5BD is a R-22 heat pump reaching up to 13 SEER/8 HSPF when paired with complementing air handlers. The system can increase an additional 1 SEER and .5 HSPF if matched with the appropriate variable-speed air handler or blower kits.
This series is promoted by the manufacturer for its quiet, durable performance, in part thanks to a composite base pan that absorbs sound and resists corrosion, as well as a galvanized steel cabinet with a polyester urethane finish and a metal wrapper that protects the unit coil from being damaged.
The JT5BD also is designed for simple maintenance with easily accessible gas values and a removable top grill assembly, a permanently lubricated fan motor requiring no maintenance, and a five minute restart time delay designed to prevent compressor problems when the unit shuts down.
When shopping for affordable units, I saw Gibson used compressors made by Copeland, so I trusted that name. Well, I'm sorry to say I'm going on the third one in 6 years, and they do not replace the unit as the warranty says for the first year. They did supply a new compressor twice, but I had to pay for new filters, flush lines, etc., twice. Copeland sucks! Gibson sucks for trusting them.

Unit was installed in 2012, recently stopped cooling so technician was called. Technician investigated the unit and discovered that the reversing valve had failed and the bleeder tube had ruptured, causing the loss of 18 pounds of R-22. Contacted Nordyne (now Nortek) and was told that they would only cover the cost of the reversing valve and bleeder tube (fairly inexpensive parts) but would not cover any of the cost of the R-22 (which is the real expense). I argued that obviously the R-22 would have never been lost had the reversing valve not malfunctioned causing the bleeder tube to rupture but, once again, was told that they would not cover the cost of the R-22. If we want a working AC this summer (which is not optional when you live in Georgia) we will have to pay several thousands of dollars for the cost of replacing 18 pounds of R-22 and labor. This company does not stand behind their products and obviously takes no pride in obtaining satisfied customers…this retired military family will never purchase a product from this company again!

Replaced my heat pump last summer with a Gibson. Within 6 months, the compressor was bad. Will never get a Gibson again!

We have replaced 2 compressors in 4 years of use, even when it is working. The unit is so loud it scares my dogs. I can't express how much I regret buying this thing. Both the contractor and Gibson want nothing to do with you once they get your money.

Lennox is the most over-priced, over-hyped equipment on the market. Their units consistently have the highest failure rate among all brands. What they are good at is marketing…..they convince consumers that their product is "elite"…..I've been a contractor for over 25 years and Lennox keeps my pockets lined with repair calls on their garbage products. Keep up the good work Lennox…HVAC Repair contractors love your products!
According to reviews from around the web, the Gibson JT5BD, manufactured by Nordyne, is designed as a builder-grade model. Contractors on hvac-talk.com note this may be a fine choice for homeowners more concerned about price than quality. With proper installation, contractors say, the unit should offer solid heating and cooling.
However, other contractors warn shoppers against this unit, stating buyers will get poor performance because of the units low quality. Contractors on forums such as askville.com suggest paying more for a more reliable and well-known brand. A review on hvac-for-beginners.com also notes this is a standard, low-tier unit, and the warranty may not be as competitive as other brands.
